your most welcome.

i'm one of those guys that is a jack of all and master of none (DAWs) - can do the basics.

i can tell you that without any training (i'm time poor), Studio One was by far the easiest to pick up. So give it a go, a version comes with the audio box and there is a free version you can download and try now. If you dont like it, get protools and your audiobox will still work. There are heaps of videos that will help you get started as well.

.... next presonus needs to build DMX software for the audio guy - i'd buy that!

or have i got my scenes and cues mixed up.... or do i have no clue :s

Thanks for that. Lighting is still confusing me - i'm trying to get into it now.... off topic a bit but i was always get confused with scenes, cues and chases as to which is which.

my understanding:
Cue - a snapshot of the lights in a given point in time - sort of like a photo
Scene - a group of cues played one after another - sort of like a movie
Chase - same as scene?

or have i got my scenes and cues the wrong way around?

My understanding is that pro tools is hardware independent now so you can buy any interface and use protools with it. Comes down to which software you prefer to use.

i regards to bad acoustics... i think we've all been there. for a long time i would try everything, gates, compressors, eq the room etc. in the end i realized i just had to go back to basics and use my ears and the room to my advantage (something i'd forgotten about when i got all the kool gadgets).

If something didnt need to be in the mix because it was already loud on stage, then i wouldn't add it to the mix and work around it. If that didn't help i used to tell the band to turn down, and if they didn't it was their show that would be degraded as a result. Sometimes you win, sometimes you dont, but the bands learnt quickly that i was there to help them, not impede them.

Tommy,

do you have an idea of budget? I think this is the first thing you need to think about and stick to it. Also how many people you generally mix for in terms of audience would be the next question.

I've been doing a lot of research into a set of speakers for foldback, but regardless on FOH or foldback, for the size (12" speaker) it keeps coming back to the K/KW series from QSC, the PRX series from JBL and there is an EV (ELX112P) that is also equivalent. All fairly light (considering they have amps built in) great sound (only minor differences) and decently priced. They all also seem to compare to the Presonus speakers expect no one has actually been able to compare the sound because they aren't available yet.

I personally use a nexo PS10 rig (10" speaker) with 2 of the matching subs. Absolutely tiny foot print for the sound, BUT tiny foot print on the credit card?? no way in hell cost a fortune! was lucky i got them at an auction, but that was pure luck!

If you want an array... or want to start looking at them, there are 2 that come to mind - the JBL VRX series (which also have a powered version) and the RCF D line (i think).... just note that they are starting - great sound from what i've heard....

Again it comes back to my original question, how much $$ and how many people. I would love an array, but i generally dont do big enough gigs to utilise them to their full potential.

my 2c - i dont have as much experience as gadget does, but its another thing you can consider.

I can fit my FOH, mixer, cables and mics into my car and its a sedan....

what did u use to program the lights and how long did it take? Did u do it before the show?
AudioBox VSL 1818 » Questions about the VSL 1818. » Go to message
I used it for presentations and found it was all the time. Updated the drivers/firmware and that made a huge difference, but it still had the issues every now and again - i was using it for live, not recording. Thing is with recording, it needs to be spot on every time, even if the artist isnt. give it a go - like a lot of people in here have said - it works for a lot of people and you wont see many of them posting on here, but it doesnt work for a lot.

Theres a lot of talk about needing to tweak your machine in a large way as that's "best practice". I don't agree with that. My opinion is that you should be able to run the device with a basic vanilla instal and it should work. i have not found that to be the case with my unit/setup. I am using an old laptop, but i also work in IT so i have a pretty good understanding of what i can and can't do. Based on the min specs, it should work fine.

Anyways my opinions and experience.

jrsmiles wrote: He says this is because running the master at unity opens up the headroom for the overall output and sounds thicker and more full than running the channel faders at or near unity, then controlling the master as a true master. What do you think about this?

Agree with everything gadget said re this. From a controlling the mix point of view i like to keep my faders around (not at) unity. Reason for this is that the movements around unity are much finer so i can be a bit more subtle/precise with the sound. Check out the board and you'll see that around unity there is a difference of about 5 db between the think black lines, but as you go further down, for the same amount of movement in the fader the difference becomes 10db and more between the thick black lines.

on the master fader - would he be moving it a lot for precise changes.... probably not.... so i'd be mixing around unity and put the master fader to what ever it needs to be. sometimes i have to turn the gain down on the channels to achieve this, but less gain is not a bad thing

AudioBox Public Beta » New!! Audiobox USB and Audiobox VSL Public Beta Driver <--- Fixed and edited for simplicity » Go to message
Ran my audiobox1818vsl for 2 weeks for presenters. Clicks and pops all over the place. Upgraded to the beta. considerable improvement, but still got the odd click and pop after a while - so it hasn't fixed it for me either. Note that this isn't even recording, its purely as a live mixer.

The laptop I'm running doesn't have USB 3.0, its running windows 7 32bit. wasn't doing anything intensive - only running 4 channels at any one given time, but the pops/clicks occurred when only 1 channel was being output (the other 3 were muted).

will we ever see this fixed? Can it be fixed?

Going to do more testing, but if i'm having this problem with 4 channels i'd hate to think what would happen with 16.....

Live Sound » Stage Lighting - Par Cans - Need some advice » Go to message
Hi All,

i'm looking to get into lighting and want to get a set of 8 or so LED Par Cans. Need some advice and this is what i know so far:

- Cheap chinese i'm staying away from
- RGBA/W leds seem to be a better experience but come at a cost
- the par size (58, 64, etc) determine the diameter of the can and the wash/spot spread.... is there much of a difference from 58 to 64?
- slim par or full?
- any particular brands that people recommend?

i'm looking for something that works all round as both up wash for back drop and/or something i can put on light stands and use either above the performer or pointing at the audience so FX if that makes sense.

Any thoughts/ideas/comments welcome.

thanks in advance.

are you getting these stops when you are using it as a live mixer or in recording?

i've taken my 1818 on the road for 2 weeks and noticed those audio dropouts (i'm using it live only for presentations) and also notice clicks and pops. just upgraded to the beta driver - hopefully that fixes it, but just wondering if u are also using it live as i've only heard of the issue when recording.
