Hey Ice Man, When you run 4 of your 153's I assume it is 2 on each side. If so, when you put two together what angle do you spread them apart? or do you just set them up side by side?

Ya, the 8 KW181's really thump! I dont put them all together except once a year in a large arena.

Yeah, 2 on each side. They were set about 8" apart, splayed out so it focused on the far right and far left areas, and the inner two were mostly focused on the stage in front and the center seating. I didn't notice any horrible issues, they had a little trouble getting to the highest part with full volume (being a 75*x75* box, that's expected) but the clarity was great throughout. Next time, I will couple them closer together and play with positioning.

In this view, you can kind of see where the top is at in relative position to the stage.

how many trips did you take up and down to get to/from the stage? do your calves hurt?

the next 2 days i'll be at a local high school for their jazz orchestra. every year they bring a "Legend of Jazz", and this year it features John Pizzarelli. should be the bomb. that gig is nothing but up-and-down the auditorium for setup. ug.

Good god, you don't even want to know! My calves, thighs, and knees are all hurting...especially since most of the time I went down between stairways, which were a good 1.5' high. It hurts to go up household stairs today...owww. And I'm a young'n. Lol. Next time, I WILL be hiring help and keeping my ass up there. Good luck!

Had some more shows this weekend. Thursday night was a dubstep/EDM show with two DJ's in a small two-room bar. WAY overkill, but they wanted bass, and they got it! 2 KW153's and 4 KW181's, with two ELX112P's for monitors, plus one more KW153 outside at reduced volume. The whole place was packed. They want me on all their shows...

Also, the lighting was a pair of 4Bar's borrowed from a friend until my Fab5's came in, and they were just sound active. Hell, everyone liked it.

My video (public video)...Make sure you switch to HD mode, taken with my iPhone 5 in the corner of the room.

Also did a benefit Saturday. Not a great turn out because of the weather, but had fun with the system. Was supposed to have help loading out, but they left after getting there. Good thing they weren't getting paid...

I plan on picking up 4 more subs soon, once money allows, just to give an even 2:1 sub/top ratio. Sounded pretty good on the band acts, and is plenty for that venue, which is good, because alot of people commented on how great it sounded and were going to recommend me for their summer concert series. I have a show this Friday, small bar show that I've done before, and a three-band bike night show at the start of June, should be interesting.

The EVs were great last night. I'm a very happy camper...

Well duh, I was just curious as to what lol. Glad to hear...mine went on foldback Saturday and they were great. Four 12's across the front, with 1x15 and 1x18 for the drummer.

And thanks a million for your solution to our outdoor problem. I have no idea how we'll ever repay all you've done for us...

Care to share your little secret? Lol. Always good to help others out when they need it. Anyways, got the system out this weekend, for a total of 20 people (there turned out to be a jazz festival downtown that supposedly killed off their business that night, so we'll see about next time. One thing's for sure, we're not doing a "100% of the door" ever again. But the system sounded good, lol. 2 KW153's over 4 KW181's, there was plenty of volume for sure.

Sounds like me. That's what I'm going to be doing for a while. 4 KW153 over 4 KW181 mains, 4 ELX112P, 2 ELX115P, & 2 ELX118P for foldback.

I will upgrade to PreSonus AI speakers once they're out and the business is stable. Mono is helping me with one of the bigger benefit gigs I have. Still hoping this rig will be big enough for the local Harley parking lot summer concert series I landed. We'll find out on the 31st. At least the first gig with them is for my own band...

Shouldn't have too much trouble. Here's a video using the 15's over 18's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z43CsvOXCC8

Also, you should have messaged me, I know a dealer who could cut you a hell of a deal.

andy martin wrote:Many thanks for the answers. To PreSonus, apologies I am from the UK as a DJ, its just that hardily anyone is using QSC153 speakers over here on the DJ scene so having Goggled things for reviews & advice your forum came up & unlike many English forums everybody seemed willing to help & gave sensible answers....just what I was looking for.

I am always looking to find something new & as a DJ using KW153s here in the UK its a new thing almost & very little information seems to exist with regards to reviews & advise, so thank you.

With regards to the DJ Mixer Set up I am using the top of the range Pioneer DJM 2000 mixer & it isn't a case of running in the red or clipping or music quality, all that is fine. yes the sound is awesome I just wondered if people were using separate EQ &* what there experiences were if they were doing that. Both speakers & mixer are new to me so just enquiring.

Just love the video of the 4 KW153s over the 4 KW181s.

At some point I shall be getting the 4 KW181s to go with them.

Thanks for all your help.

If I was you, I would go ahead and get at least one pair of the KW181's. The 153's are great, but they lack the low of the low end, which the KW181's were designed to do. I wouldn't worry about an EQ if you are playing DJ music most of the time, maybe a dual 15 band EQ would help get rid of reverb in large areas, but other than that it's not necessary...in the DJ world, EQ's can cause more harm than good. Make sure your audio files are of a higher quality (128kbps or greater), set up proper gain structure, and you should be fine. The KW series is a GREAT loudspeaker as far as audio quality goes IMHO, so you shouldn't need an EQ.

andy martin wrote:Hi Can someone help here. I have 4 x QSC KW153s, some times I run just 2 & some gigs I run all 4. I am a DJ so playing recorded music. Does anyone run these will additional EQ. Currently I am running these strait out of the DJ Mixer into the speakers but feel the addition of a graphic Equaliser would improve the sound even further, any comments / advice would be appreciated.

I wondered where this thread went. To answer your question, for DJ music, these are about the best you're going to get. For DJ music, depending on what you play, 2 tops and 4 subs should be plenty. EQ shouldn't be necessary. Make sure your gain structure is set up right, and nothing in the chain is clipping (in the red). You may notice quality suffering if your mixer is outputting a distorted signal, or if your music is of lower quality (anything lower than 128kbps)

Back to the thread. I finally bit the dust and purchased the new rig, along with a bunch of other stuff. Before, I was using the Studiolive 2442, with EV ELX speakers (4 12's, 2 15's and 2 18's, all powered), with assorted Shure mics. Now, the rig consists of

Studiolive 24.4.2
4 QSC KW153 15" three-way tops
4 QSC KW181 18" subwoofers
EV ELX for foldback
Audiopile 24x12-150ft reel snake
Audiopile mic and cable cases
20 K&M mic stands (12 tall, 8 short)
5 Audix RAD360 wireless systems with 5 handheld OM3's ( OM7 capsule) and 5 lav packs
6 Shure SM57's for instruments
Audix DP7 drum mic kit
16 Blizzard Fab5 RGBAW LED PAR cans

I had the system running first day, and it blew me away, the sound quality is awesome. Right now I'm running the tops normal, with a small slope at around 90Hz, and running the subs off an aux send (aux fed sub), and it sound AWESOME. Without the subs, the tops have plenty of punch and clarity, even at high volumes. I ran two tops over two subs (full range, mains only) for a small blues show this weekend, and the clarity of the Audix RAD360's into the KW's was amazing. I will be using them again the next two weekends, first one will be a small bar show (2 tops over 2-4 subs pending on size, and what I feel like doing lol), and the next one will be an all-day benefit with everything from vocalists to 4-5 piece bands. Full system comes out then Here are two demo videos that i took when I got the system.

Recorded music, Florida Georgia Line - Tell Me How You Like It: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unqf1mcVLHI

Live Show (recorded before the KW's but with the Audix RAD360's), Southern Ground - Whistlin' Dixie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YeHQTTFEE8

Here's a couple clips from that same show, using the EV speakers all around. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJlev1DT4rA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abI4MQ2hAi8 (yes, I was a bit heavy on the delay, I realized that)

Not sure. Mine will see outdoor use but they will have tarps ready, and be under a shelter of some sort.
