Sorry to hear about your dog...

If you go mac + VSL series interface, I'm 99.99 % sure you'll be back in trouble. Either wait until presonus comes with a new driver / firmware with a solid fix or buy an interface from another company.

AudioBox Public Beta » Temporary solutions for clicks, pops and other AudioBox issues » Go to message
Until we get a new driver or firmware that will take care of all problems, I though we all could post our tips for temporary solutions for the issues with the AudioBox products.

After a few months of every day use of the 1818VSL with various driver versions:
(Tested on all OS from Leopard to Mountain Lion and on all kinds of mac computers)

Pros:
*Gotta love the iPad controller and the VSL software concept, lovely preamps, nice design. Works perfectly on windows machines (as far as I know.)

Cons:
*The known click and pop problem occurs randomly, mostly all the time, no matter what mac computer ,OS X or DAW (no wifi, bluetooth or any software running besides pro tools and VSL)

*Every time I get an DAE error in pro tools (cpu overload or disk overload), the 1818VSL virtually disconnects and I have to restart it and go in to pro tools playback engine settings and re-select it and then reload the entire session.

*Sudden drop outs when ever connected. Restart required to get the audio back.

My temporary fix for the clicks and pops, pro tools hardware disconnetions and sudden dropouts :

* Try record without the VSL software and record in highest buffer size possible even though the latency will kill you, you might get away with no clicks if you're lucky.

*Temporary fix for the pro tools hardware disconnections:
Do NOT run the VSL software along with pro tools.

* As far as I can tell, the AudioBox VSL software seems to work best with Snow Leopard when it comes to stability. It still crashes and requires restarts every now and then but it happens much more often if you're running Lion or Mountain lion. So my suggestion is to go back to snow leopard.

JonnieC wrote:Hi there.

I have the Audiobox USB, and I am using Mountain Lion. I can't seem to find a link to a download for a Mac driver for my product, only Windows ones. Can anyone suggest where I can find the Mac version?

I guess that the USB series don't require a driver for mac. It probably runs through the build in CoreAudio. Maybe you are looking into the VSL software but that doesn't work with the AudioBox USB. I think you need the VSL series for that to work.

You're not alone in this...

I bet you're on a Windows system?

If you still have the possibility to return your PreSonus hardware then DO IT! I'm so tired of the cracks, pops, clicks and the VSL driver crashing all the time. I bet PreSonus are working very hard on this issue but it may take forever to solv these annoying problems. The beta driver solved some crackling noise but it's still not acceptable for professional usage. I have to restart it several times per hour because the audio disappears and the peak meters freeze. Unless you want to play with Windows computers for an unknown future, I would return the interface and buy Focusrite instead.

terabyte wrote:Clicks and crackle went away first when I changed setting to "Normal" then reappeared and then I had to switch to "Safe" and clicks appeared on some recordings. Strange thing is - I don't hear clicks while monitoring live but only when recording is played back. Buffer settings are anywhere from 64 to 2048 samples. I have current mac mini and ML. 1818 vsl as a master via word clock to Digimax D8... It looks like bunch of people having clicks on previous OS X too. Too bad probably sending 1818 back to the store...

I don't think sending the 1818VSL back to the store will help. I went back and tested with several new 1818VSL:s but no difference. You could try but I don't think it will solv your problem.

It is a driver issue. I went back to the store and we tested 5 1818VSL units in three different mac laptops and two iMacs. Exaclty the same clicking problems when recording audio. All 1818VSL units worked perfectly on Windows PC:s. Try the the 1.2.1 AudioBox VSL Beta driver. It has less problems with clicking.

I'm om Mountain Lion. The clicks and pops seems to have decreased a lot. It still don't sync perfectly with Pro Tools 10.2. If I change the HW buffersize in pro tools, It will sound terrible until I flipp the "Performance" setting in VSL to "Fastest" and back to "Safe". Over all it's better than previous drivers. Thanks.

Can you test recording an audiofile in your DAW with 128 samples and run the VSL driver in the background and tell me if you notice any clicks or pops from the DAW monitor return? I'm on vacation a couple of days more so I can't test it out my self yet.

pahtcub wrote:The problem with downgrading is that unless you made a bootable usb you can not redownload lion from app store if you purchased that way because it checks your current version. Also if you have the install disk saved on your computer it will not install again because it checks the version of your current install. I changed my version number in core service to "trick" the computer into thinking I didn't have 10.8 and installed lion again over mountain lion which killed my computer completely, couldn't use any hot keys on boot to choose startup disk/safemode/target disk mode etc.

If I go in to "purshased" in Mac App Store I'm still able to redownload OS X Lion. ( I'm on ML )
AudioBox VSL 1818 » No love for VSL in Mountain Lion » Go to message
How hard can it be downgrading? I change OS version all the time. Just create a bootable Lion USB drive, backup your most precious files to another drive, and restart your computer and press the alt-key before the start up sound. Choose your USB drive as start up disk. Launch disk utility, erase your drive, install Lion. It doesn't get any harder. A clean install is always good for your Mac = )
