How does themuzic record his tutorials? I know he uses Camtasia but I can't seem to get it to recognize my Firestudio so that I can record my DAW audio plus my voice through the microphone.

I know LMike was trying to figure this out at some point too but I couldn't find the thread to see if there had been a solution.

Any idea?

I do tutorials for Groove3 and YouTube on Mac with ScreenFlow and Windows with Camtasia. Usually, I use two interfaces and some sort of analog mixer. I can provide more specifics if you want. I would type more except I'm on the iPad right now.

I think Johnny does something similar using some sort of trick with the monitor station.

I'm on Win7 so whatever solution is available for that. I don't understand what you mean when you say you use two interfaces and an analog mixer.

Essentially I can't make Camtasia recognize audio when it's coming out of Studio One. I'm using a Firestudio as my interface. For example. If I start up Camtasia and record my desktop and start talking through my mic and play something through a regular audio player on my computer, it records the system audio and my voice just fine. But when I open up Studio One it will record my voice just fine, but when I play something it doesn't record the Studio One output (unless I just record the sound of my speakers, which sounds like crap).

I can't figure out how to get Camtasia (or any other desktop recording software) to record both my voice and the system audio when playing something in S1. Confusing.

It is inherent to the ASIO format, what you would do is route the S1 audio out through the first audio interface.

Loop the stereo out of interface 1 back to the input of interface 2, connect the mic to interface 2 as well and record both inputs on separate audio tracks in Camtasia.

You could mix in a mixer and just record the stereo output of that coming into the 2nd audio interface.

If you use your internal audio interface you can create a loopback adapter.

This is all correct. I have at times used this loop back scheme. The thing is while performing a video tutorial, there are so many things going on that a simple mixer just makes it much clearer to keep the your thoughts focused on the topic at hand.. You can also easily adjust levels or mute things.

I don't always do this the same way but typically I am capturing just a stereo track in Camtasia. I use the Firestudio(FSP) as the Camtasia capture interface and I connect my voice over *mic to an analog mixer so that the mic goes to both left and right channels on the video. The mixer L and R outputs go to the FSP inputs 1 and 2.

I use a different audio interface for DAW playback. Currently that is a Focusrite Saffire. The Focusrite outputs go to the **mixer. I can adjust the DAW playback level on a fader or from the interfaces main out.

I have found that editing is far easier if I don't talk over the music playback. You will notice over the last year with my Groove3 and YouTube videos, I rarely talk during music playback or recording examples. This makes editing the levels much easier and generally improves the production.

For whatever reason the features of Camtasia(PC) and Screenflow(Mac) that can grab computer audio don't work with the Firestudio and many other firewire interfaces. It does however work with some of the cheaper USB interfaces. I keep a lower end Saffire 6 USB handy in case I am doing a tutorial that does require directly grabbing computer audio.

I hope this is a bit clearer!

Bill

* My mic input is actual a recording chain. I use a preamp/gate/comp/limiter then into an analog EQ before the mixer. Since you can't really apply any plug-in processing in Camtasia, I use hardware to get a completely produced voiceover sound while shooting.

** For a long time I used a Mackie VLZ for this mixer but a couple of months ago replaced it with the analog summing section of a Dangerous D-Box monitor controller.

I just use my Monitor Station. I route a set of Headphone out back into my Firestudio Tubes 1 & 2 inputs then turn on the talk back mic. Then Camtasia records both the music and my voice.

The levels are tricky at first but it works nicely.

I patched my 2408's headphone out to the line input of my windows audio card and record the audio at 44/16 that way while using Jing. I edit the screen capture in Vegas if need be.

What if I just want to record the sound of my DAW with no voiceover into Camtasia using my FSM? I can't even get this accomplished.

That would mean you're not setting up Camtasia correctly. Go into the audio setup and see what it's set to.

In camtasia...tools...inputs...I can only set the following:

Stereo Mix
Microphone (FSM)
Microphone (Realtek)
Or Do not record microphone.

I can not figure out how to route the audio from S1 into camtasia. This is freaking frustrating.

I use iShowU HD to record my desktop. With the download you get soundflower which you use in your system preferences as the output and in studio one as your Audio device. Then just set iShowU to record system audio and it works perfectly.
