connect the computer to the mixer, run VSL on the computer and run SL Remote on the iPad.

By VSL do you mean Universal Control software or is VSL something different? I can't get my iPad to connect to my Windows PC laptop either. Did you ever make the video? Can you write up some directions and post them somewhere?

That's funny, because I actually have better results with my wifi turned off on my laptop. One night, I couldn't get the iPad to stay connected for more than 5 minutes at a time. So, I took a hunch and turned off the wifi on my laptop and it connected and stayed connected all night.

I would like to set it up for 5 Ghz instead of 2.4 Ghz. It cause havoc with my wifes audio technica microphone running in the 169 Mhz range while mine running in the 680 Mhz range does just fine. I am using a Cisco Router and when talking to Cisco over the phone, they WOULD NOT help me setting it up into the 5 Ghz mode. They actually REFUSED to help me.

I have no advanced knowledge with PC, WIFI and such things. What I learned by reading this forum is, that it's much likely not to have problems by using a mac.My questions:
- what would be the right hardware for controlling SL remote (which type of mac, which type of iPad)?
- is it possible to control the SL with mac and iPad and to record with the same mac and capture sw at the same time?
- is a separate WLAN (5 GHz) necessary, or is it a recommendation in case of problems with the build in devices of mac and iPad?
Thanks for your help.

1) any ipad will work - I use the cheap wifi only 16gb
2) Yes
3) No you do not need 5ghz unless you already use 2.4ghz wireless mics / iems. I run 2.4ghz week in week out at all kinds of venues and have not had any issues using wireless Shure SM58's/PSM900's and Senheiser G3 IEM's

it is recommended you do use your own router - they are super cheap to buy something decent now anyway

OK, here we go... My iPad 2 won't see my StudioLive 24.4.2. Heard thsi before?
OK, the obligatory list of checks:

1. I'm no expert, but yes, I watched the videos, read all the forums, and tried everything I could find.
2. it's an HP laptop, WIndows 7, firewalls off, Linksys G router 2.4 GHz, hardwired to laptop.
3. I turned off the laptop's own wireless connection, so as not to confuse it.
4. My iPad does see the Linksys, and shows it's connected, with password protection.
5. I updated the Universal Control first, then checked mixer's firmware. All updated.
6. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Univ. Cntrl. drivers like 3 times now.
7. I deleted and re-installed the app on my iPod twice
8. I tried turning stuff on and off and connecting it in every possible combination of ways. Many times.

All I ever get is the offline demo. Sucko. the VSL works fine, but the iPad just does not connect to it.

Any other great ideas? I paid $50 to rush this iPad to my house in time for this weekend's gig, and it's about to be a total waste of money...

Maybe it's a silly question but anyway: what's the difference between the iPad app and an ordinary screen sharing software? Or is it the same?

Guy, just purchase 3 SL mixers. One 24 and two 14.4's. I just went through this whole thread with great information. Just one question,...Okay, so ithe ipad doesn't need to have an internet data plan? I plan to use this system in an mobil situations. So I need a laptop with an wireless internet plan? One I get the internet connection going in my laptop, through my laptops ethernet port, I connect it to a wireless router? Sorry if you all answered these questions. I might have missed them. Thanks.

Hi raygoza_raul,
You don't need a data plan. Wifi is all you need. Check this (5 second search on youtube... ):

Cheers,

Both the Macbook and the iPad connected with NO problem. The only thing with the Airport Express is, there are no ports to directly connect a Cat5 cable to the wireless router to your Macbook/Laptop. Both Macbook & iPad are on the Wireless network. You have to run Airport Utility to get into the router. It is working perfectly.

This confirms that the iPad will use the 5GHz freq.

Hey Fazmanicg,
Good info here. I've been running the Mac Book Pro with the iPad SL Remote by simply using an adhoc network created with the MBP. I realize this is sketchy. We've been OK so far because we haven't had a lot of other wireless activity. Since we're thinking of adding some other wireless gear, I was planning to get an Airport Express. But I was bummed after I read your thread that there is no Ethernet connection between the MBP and the Airport Express. I just like the idea of a cabled connection when possible.
It seems that several folks are running it this way without any problems. Anyone care to chime in?

Also, I'm interested in hearing from anyone who is running multiple iPads for monitor mixing.
Thanks,
BJD

BIG difference. A screen sharing app attempts to put all the screen real estate of a full size computer screen on an iPad. Sort of like "Puttin' 10 pounds of 'taters in a 5 pound sack". The screen just gets too crowded and too small.

The iPad app is native to the iPad and was intelligently designed to accommodate fingers instead of a mouse pointer. The iPad app is a whole different animal and very well done.

Scottish,
Man that's a tough one. Maybe someone else will chime in here and get you some answers. Also, it might be a good time to rattle tech support. It's seems you've tried all the things that would make the most sense. This is probably obvious, but you're sure you've got Universal Control going and there's a definite connection between your laptop and SL?

I know you probably don't want to hear this but when I first got my SL 16 and got busy connecting it up to a brand new Win7 beast of a PC, all I got were hassles. That was almost two years ago. I got so fed up with Windows and Bill Gates, I drove down to the Mac store and threw down the plastic for a Mac Book Pro. I got home and was up and running flawlessly in 5 minutes. Never had an issue since. I'd been in a PC world for years (and still am at my business due to compliance issues) but after the introduction of a Mac in my music world, I've since added about seven different devices with an "i" prefix. Mac Pro, Mac Server, Mac Mini, Multiple Mac Book Pros, iPad, etc, etc. I've got the whole family running in a Mac world. It won me back a huge slice of peace of mind. I will NEVER go back.

If you can scrounge up the cash, "Go Mac and you'll never go back". It'll let you get back to playin' music.

Best to you,
Joe

waveburner32 wrote:Airport express strictly wireless in three different venues each for 3 hour shows and each recording between 12 and 18 tracks in capture. Monitoring the network traffic I really don't see any advantage to hard wiring the laptop to the Airport.

Range has been pretty incredible and more than sufficient. I don't even notice a drop in signal to the iPad until I get a couple of brick walls between me and the router. I did manage to push up a guitar solo from the venue restroom on Friday.

Funny story- I'm two hours into a show Saturday and all of a sudden I start getting this creeping 5k feedback. I hadn' t been behind the board since set break when I restarted capture. The club I'm in has a row of couches along one of the side walls and I've been chillin' in one mixing all night.

So I hit the house EQ and pull 5k down a bit. Feedback's still creeping around. So i start running through the EQs to the downstage wedges. Still there and slowly heading into runaway. I book down to the board as it starts to really get loud and gently pull down the main. No change and people are starting to hold their ears. I've got the mains at 50% and start pulling aux sends down. Nothing! Finally I pull EVERYTHING. I literally have people storming the sound booth yellling at me like I can't hear it. 5k at about 110dB and holding steady.

The club owner comes up to me and says "do you think it's my DJ mic?" (this club has a separate house system)

"I don't know, did you just turn it on?"

"Yes"

"Well you should probably turn it off"

He did and the feedback stopped. Then some dude says "maybe if you stayed at the soundboard instead of wandering around all night that wouldn't have happened!"

So much for the sweet anonymous mixing I was enjoying... </thread hijack>

That's funny!!!!
I thought that sort of stuff only happened to me!

I have the exact same probem. Firmware updated, UC installed, ipad2 app installed, demo runs. when I connect the board to my mac mini UC opens, so comp recognizes the board, when sl software open on the the mini, changes on the board appear on the monitor and vice versa, so the board and computer are talking. but when I connect the board to the mini, the iipad app only displays the offline demo. airport on the mini is off, wifi only ipad2. wireless router to the ipad 2 is working also. just that the ipad and mac mini aren't communicating for some reason.
