Due to the majority vote of ::drum roll:: two people in the initial thread for the second group mix we'll be working with:

"Dog Eat Dog" by the band Panda Thief

The band put the song up for mix by all who wanted so no worries about copyright or anything crazy (unless you try to steal the song and make money in which case you're just a jerky-jerk-jerk )

So if you want to give it a go with me and the one other person that responded, download the files and mix the song with the S1 plugins so we can share the mix and see what we all did!! (Note: You don't have to use only the S1 plugins, but if you want to share your project file that's the best course so that we can all see the same thing. Freeware plugins are cool also, just note which ones you used so others can get them if they want to.)

I recommend box.net, dropbox.com and/or Soundcloud for hosting the files because we can all just listen to the songs via link that way. I'll collect the mixes in this post as they roll in...or trickle in...either way.

Note: Pick up this notepad VST and take notes on the tracks (just add it to your track) as you mix, then we can all see what was going on in your crazy heads at the time.

Hope to see ya'll's' mixes!!

- Gizz

    here's my go at it.

I did not put any notes down because I mixed it before your post of the tracknotes app. ( thanks you by the way)
I'll get by later to put notes up. Out side of some compression and limiting using slate FGX, rough rider, Alloy, S1 VST's, I replaced the kick with drumagog LE.

Stupid me - I suggested one thread per song and still posted my mix in the "wrong" thread ...

Anyway - here's my fairly quick go at Dog Eat Dog: http://db.tt/uFSscRB.

No notes or project file for this version because I used mostly Waves along with the internal plug-ins.

Feel free to share your opinions.

P.S.: Working to K-14 standard here, resulting in DR12.

Correct, and it shows up as an effect. Anyways, what a cool thing, I really will find good use for that. Not having the ability to write notes in S1 kind of saddened me.

Here's my go at it. I really didn't like most of the vocal tracks, some parts sounded distorted or over compressed (or both) to me... or maybe just a bad mic choice, dunno. It's a 320k mp3, the only bit rate I use now for mp3 rendered out of the studio.

I didn't do the "note taking" thing, that's way too distracting for me, sorry.

I don't know what you did but I like the way you mellowed the vocals. Much easier on the ears, especially through my monitors. The original mixed vocals were a bit harsh.

Sounds (and looks) like they overloaded the analog chain somewhere on the choruses, maybe on purpose, but yeah... that harshness in the vox was kinda grinding on my nerves a bit. I think (on the chorus) I ended up dipping around 3k or so, don't remember exactly but somewhere up there.

I also manually de-essed all the vocal tracks which kinda helped.

Nice mix but if you dont mind how do you do that conversion from K-14 to DR standards (I barely know about DR, I must confess).

Great work folks. I updated the first post with the individual mixes.

If you can, try and give some feedback to the folks who have posted their mixes. I've found that one of the biggest problem for me working in a home studio is that sometimes when I'm working on something I get bogged down in my own opinions on the song.

It's great to get an external ear on your work, but only if you can learn something from it. Maybe your monitors aren't reproducing the bass correctly? Maybe you're using too much verb? Maybe your mix sounds fantastic on another forum user's $2000 monitors in his professional studio!! All great things that I'd want to know!

Hey, how did Kahlbert make his file play from dropbox like that? When I try that with one of my files there they download and play in my browser but when I play his links, they have a media player right on dropbox.

Or is that something available only to paid users? Thanks.

Well, I cheated. I did the mix with S1 and RME meters set to K-14, then ran the resulting file through the TT offline DR meter to get the DR value ...

This happens when you use a new feature of the latest dropbox version. You don't need the "public" folder anymore, but rather you can right click on any file in any location, and choose "Get Sharable Link". The rest is fairly self-explanatory.
