I will never understand why people get so emotional about DAW's, they are just a tool...what people need to do is get emotional about their music.

Sorry to disagree, but in this instance you are wrong. Re-reading that first post, I am convinced of one thing. The daw is the software, and the PEOPLE are the tools.

Lol. People get emotional about anything they like.

Somewhere on the net there's a forum board where guys who like Jeeps are ranting about how much Hummer's suck and why people that buy Hummer's are suckers and why only the choices they personally make are sensible. Replace daw with video game console or stereo speakers or a particular brand of condom. It's all the same.

I use XXX Large Magnums btw.

Yeah, chip clips.

I tried Super Glue first but that didn't work so well.

Nice twist and rather witty I must say...But I stand by my statement. This reminds me of a post I made on another forum...I will share it with you.

---------------------------------

Take a guitar, any guitar it's hanging on a wall in a music store waiting for someone to buy it.

2 people walk into this store and look at the guitar.

The 1st dude "thinks man that's a nice looking guitar, I wonder what make it is, what kind of pickups it has?"

The 2nd dude thinks "I just want to play guitar that one costs to much money I'll look for a lower cost one."

So these 2 people take home their guitars.

The 1st dude tells all his friends, joins a forum for that kind of guitar, posts pictures and videos of it...ect

The 2nd dude goes home and plays his guitar and takes lessons.

Years later.

The 1st dude sold his guitar to buy a new one and joined a new forum, posted picture and videos.

Years later the 2nd dude has a couple of albums and is in a band

IMHO, in order of importance

1) The song (composition and arrangement)

2) The performance (Talent)

3) The recording (DAW/engineer)

This is why crackly Billie Holiday albums sound better than 98% of what you hear on the internet. Keith Urban with an Applause guitar and a cassette recorder is going to sound better than anything I come up with

Unfortunately number 1 takes a lot of study and practice; number two, while it can be improved is basically God given, and number three can be purchased, discussed and argued about over the internet without much effort

What's in your wallet?

Unfortunately he owes the record company over $100,000 for recording costs and advances not recouped through record sales.

The first dude sold his guitar and used the money to fund a start up that makes XXX Large condoms that Mike endorses.

It's probably not inconsequential to say that all 3 of those are specialties and it's the rare bird indeed who actually does them all very well.

Which is why Diane Warren probably doesn't spend much time stressing over digital minutia with whatever daw she might own, as opposed to just writing really good songs and letting the other specialists worry about their specialties.

Agreed!

And as to Ms. Warren, she's penned one or two good ones..

Just for my personal edu-ma-cation and enlightenment.... dance music genres aside....

Has anyone ever actually penned, produced, arranged, mixed and mastered a hit record all by themselves with any DAW? If not, some of our personal goals may be more a recurring fantasy (and irrrationally high) than anything else.

Make a really good demo, pawn one of your kids (preferably the slow one), and hire some people to take it to the next level. Or keep doing what everyone else is doing, be a little bit of everything up to and including record company exec, put your songs on Bandcamp, and cross your fingers while hoping to be discovered.

Also known as "playing the lottery".

No risk, no reward. In this case the risk is largely financial... as in spending money on talented producers and audio guys.

The 2 Worlds

Day after day and year after year I have seen it, heard it and read it...the 2 worlds of ART.

In one world you have Musicians, Engineers, Producers that spend day after day, weeks that turn into years that turn into a life time... spending their time and efforts on the material things of their ART and in the end they are masters of those material things that have no life and no music.

In the other world you have Musicians, Engineers, Producers that spend day after day, weeks that turn into years that turn into a life time... spending their time and efforts on the fundamentals and skills it takes to make great music, these are the people who become stars, mix and produce the greatest albums in history and are sought after by the big labels for their skill and talent which is their life.

Every note ever played on a piano is at the end of your fingers

Even that I can only due part time since the rest of the day I spend at Schwab's Drug Store's lunch counter waiting to be discovered.
