One thing that could be 'new' is the functionality that was in the video editing suite Liquid Studio.

It had background rendering of transitions and fx while you were editing. This essentially meant that the track was internally frozen but you could still do editing like in a normal track with no restrictions. It was also intelligent enought to only render changed parts therefor not wasting resources on already rendered stuff.

OT: Then Avid came by and bought the product to only throw it away . Today I edit in Avid Media Composer and I don't like their rendering workflow at all....

Hi everyone, new here.....

I'm a gnat's hair away from purchasing S1 Pro, but I have a question before I do.
If I buy S1 Pro now and then buy the upgrade to v.2 when it's available, will the full version of v.2 be available for download via my account thereafter (in a similar manner to the way Avid does) ?

Welcome!

As of today we have no idea of how Presonus will handle this since this is their first major upgrade and they haven't told us anything in this matter either....

I heard well founded rumors about a 2013 release and iLok...

Haha ...

Think of all the lives they'd save if they release at 6 PM on New Years eve. All the drunk drivers would be at home playing with Studio One.

ok, well, I'm hoping a Presonus lad will see my post and be able to answer.

It's just that I would prefer to have a full installation of any software available to me rather than going through an update process.
As I said, I'm ready to buy it - but this is holding me back!

This is the way I see many companies going today. I'm thinking about Reaper. Whenever there is an updage/upgrade, you install the full version and don't just update the executable files. I'm hoping presonus does the same.

It's always been that way with S1. There's never been any update or upgrade or bug fix "patches". Just download the installer and run it again.

That's great to read!

Well, I did it. Thank you all.

Indeed, it will be a full installer, like all of our releases have been for version 1. In fact, you could run V1 and V2 side by side if you wanted, for instance to perhaps download the V2 demo (which will be available at release) to test the waters before moving important material over.

On this "full installer" point-- does this mean a Studio One upgrade will result in me using up roughly 2X hard drive space? If that is true, and I want to limit the space it takes up on my hard drive, what is the best technique for just having the most recent version on the drive?

The current version of S1 weighs in at less than 300MB, so having the app on there twice won't gobble up much space. I currently have several older versions on my system, side by side with 1.6.5 -- they all use the same external resources -- the sound sets, loops, etc. that eat up more space -- and those don't need to be on your drive(s) multiple times for each version (and I doubt that V2 will require you to update those in any way either). My guess would be that any more stuff like that that they chose to throw in will be bundled for download, and that the older material would not require any updating or conversion to continue to work with the new version of S1. Of course, I could be wrong, too (and often am , so don't take my reasoning - or lack, thereof - as gospel).

As far as your question about how to best have only the latest version, are you on Mac or PC?

If you are on Mac, you just drag the newest version to the Applications folder, and it replaces the old one automatically (unless you have renamed the older version with its version number, as I do, to save it in case of difficulties with the newest version).

If you're on PC, you're on your own -- I have no idea how it works in your world -- I'm fairly sure someone else will chime-in, though.

Why would you need 2x the space? Just download the installer, which is 60mb and install. It will replace you current version and of course will not cost you much more disk space.

I'm holding off of other purchases, which is tough with all of the great drum deals right now (AD, SD2 crossgrade), so that I'm sure that I have funds for this upgrade. No other DAW that I have used (Cubase, Sonar, Tracktion), has ever been as stable and intuitive as S1...so I'm all in (although I'm hoping that there will be an early adopter upgrade discount on the day of release)!!
