Hi,

My 24 track AI will be here tomorrow. My first tasks will setting up my hardware synths. I have 6 stereo pairs of outputs. Would it be wise to put them in the line in's of tracks 13 - 24? That gives me 12 open for audio coming from Sonar.

Another configuration can be made the following way.

I also have the Mackie 1202 VLZ. I can put all the synths in that and only use 2 tracks of the presonus. Is that overkill? There has only been one time I used almost all of the mx8000s 24 x24. However, that was rare.

Oops I forgot about another, oops more. I have a Motif rack and the VLM 70, the DM pro drum synth. As well as a q2 reverb and lexicon reverb. Should I stay away from hardware FX and use presonus and/or VSTs. And should I keep at least 1 compressor.

Any suggestions are welcom

Personally, I think adding the other mixer to the setup would degrade the sound significantly..you should be fine doing as you said, using the channels of the mixer 13-24. As for outboard processors, I use them if the efx are better than what is on the board. For instance, the Sl/Ai mixers don't have chorus, or super deep verbs.

I agree with Gadget. If you can get away with doing what you need to do without cascading the signal, you'll have a lot less opportunities for garbage to get in your path.

The Studiolive boards are incredibly simple to set up stereo pairs, which greatly simplifies setting up EQs and such. You will enjoy the power of the Fat Channel there. I would say the compressors onboard should meet your needs, but you can always insert one of yours if it is a sound you enjoy. A regular Y type insert cable makes quick work of it if you'd like to compare.

As Gadget correctly noted, there are some FX that the onboard units don't do so a good Lexicon verb isn't bad to have in your back pocket. The FX on the board are good on vocals and drums, really clean in the general purpose vein. I also have a Lexicon unit I keep just in case I need one of those really long verbs or something not in the board. For live use, I just use onboard stuff... the Lex stays in the rack at home.

I agree. I got the mixer out of the box. Tomorrow I do the firewire board, install the network and load the software.

I am going to save one compressor, the lexicon and the quadraVerb, I have plenty of different cables.

The fun begins

Hi,

I found something interesting. I asked my sales rep at Fullcompass the same question about my synths. He agreed that I should not us a cheap non/pro like the small mackie.

He did suggest that by using the Ashly LX308 Stereo Line Mixer, I would have high quality going into the presonus. This brings me to another question. Should I plug the output of the Ashly into a line in or use one of the aux?

Your help is appreciated,

Thanks,
Steve
