Hi everybody
I want to buy a 16.4.2AI but I have 2 questions on my mind.
First : Can I use a firewire 400 card to plug the studiolive on my pc (9 to 6 pin firewire cable) and if it's possible what will be the result and the loose against a firewire 800 card?
I think it's better to use a f800 card but (second question)what card will be the best (os w7) i see this http://www.sonnettech.fr/product/allegrofirewire800pcie.html , is it a good card , is the chipset is the good one , do you have another card in mind?
Thx for the answer and sorry for my english .

Thx for the answer MrWright .
I need just to know if it's possible to use it with a F400.

According to the product page, it requires FW800:

Thx again mrWright but I saw some card in f400 in the list like
Sonnet PCI FWUSB2A
Sonnet PCIe FWUSB2A-E TI XIO2000
Sonnet ExpressCard|34 FWUSB2-E34 TI XIO2000
who have only 1394a (f400) port so what I have to think about this.
And if I used a f400 what was the result for the recording, more latency?

Sorry if i was misleading. The approved firewire list was compiled before F800 was a requirement.

Ok, you've worried me...

I've just upgraded my 24.4.2 to a 32.4.2AI which I collect tomorrow.

My laptop has f400 (with a 4 pin connector) which works great with the 24.4.2 Are you saying it WON'T work with the 32.4.2AI which has f800 ?

I thought f800 would downgrade to f400 without any problem...

From the AI manual:

Please note: While connecting your StudioLive AI-series mixer to a FireWire 400 connection on your computer and daisy-chaining a FireWire 400 device to the secondary s800 port are supported, this will reduce your StudioLive bus speed to 400 Mbps, and you may experience reduced performance. To experience the full power of your StudioLive AI-series mixer, it is highly recommended that you connect to a true s800 connection or to a Thunderbolt connection using an adapter.

ok, so it will work just fine on a f400 connection to the laptop, but if you also try to run external HDDs or video cameras or any other equipment on the same f400 bus you'll most likely run out of bandwidth...

That's fine with me.

Thanks.

Thx Mrwright I read this on the ai manual and don't understand correctly this note (my english are bad).
So I can try to use myF400 port but i think I'm going to buy a new one with the good chipset.

Thomas

It should work ok on F400, but don't connect anything else to the F400 as the same time. Like an external hard disk.

Thomas:
I love my Sonnet Allegro f800 card as I use it both for my old 24.4.2 mixer and my UAD Sattelite with no problems.
The Sonnet card is the way to go if you want to be without problems, I think !!

The FireWire 400 may affect some features such as cascading mixers or the larger channel count mixers. They put a FireWire 800 port on the mixer for a reason. You may be ok, but you'd be safer with FireWire 800.

Thx for all the answers
Sonnet was my first choice and i'm gonna buy one.
And for the f400 it's a good news so it will be more easy to find an old but not to old laptop with f400 to record live perform with the studiolive (I can take a desktop but maybe to fat for what I want to do).
