I need to have 5 identical stereo pairs for an art installation. I have considered using a signal distributor, but they are likely to degrade the signal, and the ones that don't cost a fortune. So the 1818VSL sounds like a nice solutions as it has sufficient outputs, just not quite clear if I can repeat the main out to the other 4 output pairs. Is this easily done in the software?

The other question is, since it's a permanent installation the computer will turn off and on automatically. Once rebooted, will the settings remain the same?

Thank you for your help

No, as is stated in the manual:

Line Outputs. The AudioBox 1818VSL has eight line outputs to route
to external devices, such as headphone amps and DJ mixers. Outputs
1 and 2 share their playback streams with the Main Outs. Outputs
7 and 8 share their playback streams with the headphone output.
Outputs 3 through 6 have independent playback streams.

If your goal is to have the exact same thing go to all pairs of outputs, then this would work. Outputs 1 and 2 are already copies of the main outs. You could make 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8 a copy of this mix using VSL. You could then plug your 10 cables in and get 5 copies of the same mix. The only difference I know of off the top of my head is the actual Main Outs have their level set by the "Main" knob on the front. You'd have to set that so it gives the same level as all the other outs (I'm guessing all the way up since that's labeled "0").

And if I understand correctly, these settings do persist on a reboot so you'd be fine there.

You were correct if he wanted them to be different, but he actually WANTS the exact same output - just 5 different connections for it. At least that's how I understood it.
