Hi,

I'm a short time away from purchasing a Presonus 16 channel AI. I'm wondering how many channels do I really need.

Right now I have 48 channel mixer. 24 for D/A audio and the rest for my hardware synths. I have 5 all around stereo synths, guitar and bass pod's. And, to use with my EWI, a Motif rack and a vl70m which adds up to 16 line in's.

There was only a couple times in the past 10 years that I used all 24 voice/audio tracks and 14 line in's for the stereo synths. For the most part I will most likely use maximum of 16 audio and 10 line in's for the mix downs.

I am pretty sure the 16 track AI will be robust enough for my needs, but does any one feel I will be sorry that I didn't get the 24 track AI?

I look forward to hearing your input so I can place my order hopefully this week.

Thanks,
Steve

You can always buy a 16 now.. See how it goes. And if in the future you want or need to buy a 2nd one ..
Then if and when Presonus release an update to link them then you can double the 16 to 32 or whatever

BTW the Fat Channel on the actual desk of the 16 is slightly smaller (because of less physical space) with slightly less features (less knobs and meters etc..). The 24 and 32 have the same fat channel. Check the images

http://www.presonus.com/products/StudioLive-AI-Series/media

The 16 is still an awesome device.. But buy what you can afford - you know if you buy the 16 you will end up needing the 24. That is "the LAW".. So if you can afford a 24 get it..

I have em all 1602/1642/2441 and Midas a 24 and 32 boards... I have a big key rig too and use my 1602 for it. it gives me 16 line inputs and FW returns and MIDI all in a real small great sounding little board... I have way too many keys and modules and to have to lug a big-ass 24 around too is not that appealing... I can do it all in my 1602 and it fits in a small pelican case one handed... the 2442 in its case is a two man job.

My main workstation is an open labs XXL and it is PC based so I use the FW return into the CR module and analog out to a volume pedal (midi volume sucks!) and return t o aux in... so I have a bazillion more synthes letting me do away with a few hardware ones...

the 1602 is a perfect Keyboard rig mixer... the 2442 is way to big...

My days of huge console is way over... Had a big Gamble 48 input when I was on the road... not no mo jo! gimme dat little 1602! it kiks ass!

Yup when it comes to playing live.....the older I get the less I want to lug around. We're fortunate that gear has evolved
the way it has.....I don't miss humping full guitar stacks and 8x10 SVT cabs one little bit!!

Who plays out?????. When I play out it's with my clarinet in a classical trio. Everything else is in the studio only. The last time I lugged anything was in the 1960's when I lugged an old bassman amp.

I have the equivalent of their rac 5 with my optoplex 790 Dell I5 with 16 gig, 1 terabyte hard drive, wireless, card that cost me way under 1000.00 two years ago with 3 years in house tech support. of course I have to add 50 dollars for a belkin 800 Firewire card.
