We are looking at replacing our HOW recording studio mixing console. It is currently an older Allen & Heat GL3x00. When we replace it we would like to add 10 - 16 more mic inputs for a drum kit and some additional vocal mics. My thoughts is to run a 32.4.2 and a 16.4.2 to accomplish the design. I would run our 6 congregation mics and 7 -8 drum kit mics into the 16.4.2 and then outputting them to their own stereo pair of sub-group outs to aux inputs on the 34.4.2. The reason for individual subgroup outs on the 16.4.2 is so we can control volumes and mute the groups individually on either console.

I have looked at the FireStudio Project and while a pair of those would work fine for me, the other operators may feel a bit intimidated knowing they have to use a computer to adjust them. Plus I need full fat channel control for the drum kit.

Let me know your thoughts.

326 = 48 inputs...
I might suggest getting 2 - 24.4.2 consoles instead ... the 32/16 will not link they can only sub mix ... 2 24 input consoles can link acting as one 48 and the aux mixes and mains act like one console...

I was actually just corrected on this. None of the AI series mixers can link at this time.

I don't see any reason why the proposed setup wouldn't work. Just make sure everything is using balanced cables. You'll have to maintain scenes and other settings separately on each mixer. If you want to use multi track capture, you'll have to use two computers.

Aux Inputs are limited on features. I don't think they have fat channel options. If they are simply getting sub group feeds from another AI then I doubt that would matter.

Right and thats the plan for now. But if we purchased two AI consoles, then when the Dante or whatever other interface cards came out you would be able to link them.....I assume.

Hmm.. I would think about getting 2 24.4.2... the older version that does link up just fine and you can get em at good deals right now... I got one of the older 2442 because I was not interested in dealing with the first version problems in a 3242. Unless you absolutely need it's features the older 2442 linked together would be better. I think you only get 32-fw channels for recording tho...

I have a Symetrix Jupiter 8... it too needs a PC but its and 8x8 matrix mixer mic/line with a few mixers in it and EQ and speaker management... great for when I need 8 mic/line channels in one rack space.

I use my firestudio Tube... it can run as a stand alone mixer and/or interface... 10 mic 16 line inputs 4 stereo mix outs real nice sounding and interfaces well with others.

Also the basic little 1602 is a killer submixer, 12 mic 16 line 4 subs--- I use mine all the time... my favorite presonus mixer!

Thanks, Sal and Mrwright,
Basically the only reason I am seeing why maybe not to purchase the 32.4.2 is because of possible stability issues. However, PreSonus has already released a firmware maintenance release which should have fixed the major early release bugs. I would rather be more future proof than buying the non AI boards though, so that's out of the question. We already use a pair 16.4.2s for FOH and monitor mixes and love them. We have a spare 16.4.2 laying on the shelf so we may move forward with the 32.4.2 and subbing in the spare 16.4.2 until the interface cards come out.

If you need a 48 channel console, there are other options that work and work now. Even when StudioLive Dante card is released, the consoles will not be configurable as one large console. You will only have two discrete front ends to your DAW or hard disc recorder.

You can't possibly know that.

Unless something has changed recently, I sure can. Multiple people at PreSonus and my rep told me so. Aside from not functioning as one console, they cannot be controlled as one console with the app. The app see two different consoles and you will not be able to be connected to both at the same time with one iPad/app. There are other 48+ consoles that will be better choices if you to control them with one app. A Soundcraft Performer or Expression have the ability to multitrack all 80 outputs and you can control them all from the app.
