While looking into these speakers and the forthcoming dante option there is one thing that isn't clear to me about their use in a dante enabled setup.

Will every speaker need the dante option installed or does only one require it, acting as some kind of master, and the rest of the speakers slaves off that master using the preinstalled ethernet and some presonus voodoo?

My understanding of it is you will have one wire feeding to the first speaker, then connecting wires between the rest. I am no Dante expert, though. Hopefully someone actually using it will chime in on this one.

The current Ethernet connection does control only. If you want Dante passing control and data, I'd assume each speaker will require a Dante card.

That's correct. The current Ethernet card is that only, Ethernet. The OP noted "forthcoming" Dante, so I assumed he was referring to the as-yet-unreleased option card Presonus has been alluding to since before the speaker series was released. You'll have to pull the Ethernet and add the Dante card to get access to those abilities.

The Ethernet connection is for direct connection of your speaker to your network for adjusting internal values, reprogramming its wireless network settings, etc. No sound goes through it at all.

I need to make time to study up on Dante and the other card options that are supposed to be coming behind it.

Th OP was asking if it would be one Dante card per speaker. My answer was "yes."

Dante will hook up the same way Ethernet does. Each speaker will hook up to an Ethernet switch which will also connect to the source. Dante uses the Ethernet network. But it requires special processing in the card.

Another option coming is AVB but that requires a switch/router that is rated for AVB. Dante just requires standard 100/1000 Mbps Ethernet.

My mistake! I just re-read the post and you are absolutely right. Sorry for clouding the water there.

I just went off to the Audinate site and did some reading on it. The possibilities are interesting and I can see why everyone is looking forward to it.

Note to OP: mwright137 is spot-on in his reply. You will need the option card in each speaker, as well as a Dante interface of some sort on the sends of the audio source.

The dante chipset (brooklyn-ii) that most likely will be in the dante option is (or soon will be) avb-compliant so there will not likley be a separate avb-card.

The reason I'm asking about if there need to be one dante card for each speaker is that there is a chance that presonus can create their own audio streams using their own protocol so that one dante card may connect to the rest of the ethernet enabled speakers, acting as a bridge.

The audinate brooklyn-ii card seems to cost approx $200 from audinate and you need to add the cost for the customized pcb with components in addition to that.

So far I've not seen any such dante card below $500 so unless presonus discounts the card heavily the cost to enable dante for four speakers could end up somewhere around $2000 + the dante card for the mixer.

This is why I'm interested in knowing if dante enabled speakers is my next thing or if I should stay analog.

Interesting thoughts, and a very good question. Perhaps someone who has some inside information will enlighten us all on the implementation.

Yeah, I recently fell in love with it about six months ago.

The option of recording up to 64 channels on a single computer using dvs or even using multiple computers for redundancy. No need to be within firewire/usb cable length from the mixer anymore. Connect a single 300ft ethernet cable if you need to be that far away or just add a switch or two to extend the length even more!

Since dante is sample accurate you can take one 32.4.2ai and one x32 both with dante and record all 64 channels in sample sync! How cool isn't that?!

Using dvs, studioone and an ipad I could remote control my mixer and monitor all channels seperatly on my computer.

The possabilities are endless...

AVB is a non-issue IMO. The video part of AVB is still up in the air. Therefore, there is no need for the rest of it. With Dante, you do not need to link from device to device. You can home run from a switch. I would do this instead of a loop. Otherwise the potential for one cable killing everything downstream exists.

AVB also requires an EXPENSIVE router. No thanks...

The price seems resonable as well. The dante license price is cheaper for a 2x2 version vs. the 32x32 or the 64x64.

One of my computers bsod today due to a crash in the dvs driver

Audinate also announced today what looks like the dvs but not dependent on any additional hardware.
