Can playback/record continue if Studio One loses focus? (Edit: YES, if you set options correctly)

I'm new to Studio One (2.6.2... on Windows 8-64 bit).

If S1 is playing back audio, as soon as I change focus to a PDF or Word, playback or recording stops until I give focus back to S1.

Is there anyway to have S1 continue to playback/record if another program has focus? (PDF, Word or browser).

Details for those who care:

I narrate audio books, and have a script in either Word or PDF, usually on the same monitor, sometimes on my second monitor (same computer). I don't usually need to see the recording details in S1 while narrating. Just seeing it's running is enough.

If I click on the script app to scroll the text, S1 stops playback and recording. Sometimes you have to scroll the text to see the next paragraph or page of text. If you're listening back, you scroll the text during playback to follow along and verify what you recorded matched the script (or to find punch-in points...)

As soon as you click to anything other than S1, playback or recording stops.

Can S1 playback audio (and record) when any other program has focus?

Is there an option I'm missing? This is a show stopper for me (would require going to another DAW.)

All ideas, links or references appreciated.

Hi!

Did you enable the "Disable asio driver in background" option?
Kind Regards

No, I can't even find that option (but I am not using any ASIO drivers...)

I have a very simple setup. Just using Windows Audio for both recording and playback.

Note that I have enabled the "Release audio device in background" (checked) in the [Options]>Advanced>Audio interface, and in the [Options]>Audio Setup > Windows Audio > Control Panel interface I have the "Exclusive Mode" turned OFF.

If I don't have those options selected, I can't run a browser with a YouTube video playing (I was watching tutorials on S1, and S1 disabled them if I switched to it to look at details shown in the tutorials.) If I don't release the background audio, I also can't look up and listen how a word is pronounced which happens in the middle of narration sessions occasionally.

I appreciate any suggestions or feedback!

I'm bumping this one.

Does anybody know IF this is even possible? To have S1 continuing playback when you switch to another application?

I don't need details, just need to know if it's possible or it's worked for you. (Once I know it can be done, I can figure out how.)

Again: Anybody ever have success with S1 continuing to playback audio when switching to another program (like a PDF file, a browser, a Word doc, etc... NON audio programs primarily, but of course a browser could be on a site with sound.)

I hate to be a complainer:

I've been a tech guy for over 20 years and on forums (used to be called "bulletin boards") for at least two decades. I'm suspecting the S1 community is still on the smaller side. While I'm new to this group, if I was using the product I understand the value of giving back to the community, but I can't use it until I know if my usage case even works.

Seems like a great product, but hard to recommend when even getting simple answers to tech issues are difficult.

I did open a ticket with PreSonus in parallel with asking this question here, but it was the weekend so I suspected this group would provide some feedback faster... They waited two days after the weekend, asked about my audio interface, I answered within a hour of them sending me the question. Then silence again for another couple days. Not exactly helpful. Good thing I wasn't trying to use this product for production work.

If I'm missing something, please let me know.

Support just sent me something, asking me to try putting everything in exclusive mode.

Don't allow it to release audio in background (advanced options), and set the Windows Audio to "Exclusive" via the Control Panel button.

That actually works, but then it's basically taken over the machine audio and has negative side effects for me.

When narrating, at least a few times in most books, you have to go verify pronunciation of words, sometimes famous people names, or cities around the world that aren't pronounced the way they are spelled (just a few examples.)

If you give exclusive rights to S1, then you can switch to another program and it keeps playing audio (my request).

You then lose all abilities to play sound from dictionary sites, YouTube or anything else that plays sound.

Seems my two usage scenarios are not common for S1, and even though Reaper or some other DAWs allow my usage case, S1 don't allow both, but I'm still hopeful I can find an answer.

S1 appears to be very well done, but my usage is outside the target audience from what I can tell.

If I'm missing anything or you have other ideas, please let me know.

BTW - Just as I rant about the lack of support, they send me a message.

I think there may be a solution that works.

I'll report back after doing enough testing to be sure, so anybody else can have access to the solution in case they need it.

Tech support found a solution.

I had to set my "Windows Audio" to "Non Exclusive" but have the "Release in Background" UNCHECKED.

Originally I had checked "Release in Background" to allow other audio to play. But once you take the Windows Audio out of exclusive mode, then you need the "Release in Background" UNCHECKED so it will continue to play when it's in the background (another windows has focus.)

Additionally, I asked if it could work if you were using a PreSonus interface rather than Windows Audio and they explained that process too.

All to say, it can be done, it's easy but NOT obvious.

A great product so far, I'm quite impressed (not that my opinion really matters...)

Little confused on your last replay but...

I have the option release audio in background unchecked and my Windows audio device ( Presonus 1818 VSL) set with both Exclusive Options on and I can play S1 in a loop and listen to YouTube on the same device.

In my config those settings didn't work, I believe it depends on what interface is being used, and maybe the version of Windows (I'm Win 8, 64 bit).

IF I had a YouTube clip running and switched to S1, the YouTube would stop.

With Windows Audio as my only interface, I have to have "Options> Advanced> Audio> Release in the background" UNchecked (same as you), and the Windows Audio NOT in Exclusive Mode.

Now I can have S1 playing audio and change the focus to a PDF, or browser or any other program and both work at the same time.

For what I'm doing, that is critical.

Sounds like your setup has a slightly different config to get the same results. I figured there had to be a way to make it work, but in my ignorance I didn't find the right combination.
