Do I need a TubePre amp for dynamic microphone when using AudioBox VSL 22?

Hello!

I use Rode Procaster, which is a dynamic microphone that needs a lot of gain on input.

So - is it good idea to add that gain by putting the TubePre V2 between Procaster and AudioBox VSL 22?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Not really.....the XMAX preamps in your VSL22 should have plenty of gain for this mic. IMHO adding a tubepre would not give you significantly better performance. That being said, the Podcaster really shines with higher end preamps such as Presonus ADL 700.

Thanks, cristofe.

Yes, AudioBox VSL 22 has a lot of gain, but still – for Procaster, it could be more for maximum reduction of noise.

What would you recommend for additional 20-25dB? FetHead from Triton Audio it's not an option – I can't buy it in my country. The same with Cloudlifter CL-1. Is there anything else worth to consider?

Well then a low end tube pre is last thing you want. You'll get the gain but you'll likely ADD noise.
You need something quiet and clean. I use an Event EMP-1 in this type of situation but they are
no longer made. Some good choices IMHO are:

Too expensive toys for my home recording "studio".

What about AudioBox VSL 22 + Presonus BlueTube V2? Would that be a better combination than AudioBox with TubePre?

No. As I said in my last post....a low end tube pre is last thing you want. You'll get the gain but you'll likely ADD noise.
However the VSL22 does have better preamps than the Audiobox USB.

Also note the 22 does not have line level inputs. It's very easy to over drive the inputs with a preamp placed before the inputs...

Sure… the only reason I asked about something between VSL 22 and Procaster, is the fact that this mic needs a lot of juice to record on reasonable loudness with gain control on about twelve o'clock.

(Sorry if my english is bad.)

The VSL22 should have plenty of gain for your needs. While I haven't read a review of one being used with the Rode
several guys here are using the 22 for voiceover with similar mics like the EV RE-20 and are getting good results
without an additional preamp.
