Ok, first, I suck at guitar. Always have, always will....

Now that we cleared that out of the way I also suck at dialing in tones on guitar. Always have, hopefully not always will...

So now that we cleared THAT out of the way I'll post my question.

I'm looking to get that nice metal tone of the guitar, I got th metal pack with the 5$ sale and been messing with it since. I see alot of people using this chain: gate->tsb audio screemer->ampire xt metal pack, and bang! They get the most awsome tones ever! Here's my problem...mine sucks! Like alot! I can't seem to get that clean distorted metal tone, I just get a dirty one no matter how I try. I understand it has probably alot to do with the guitar itself and as I saidI suck at guitars, but my bands guitarist is quite good and is picky with his gear. He uses a les paul custom with axe-fx 2 into an egnater 4×12 amp, so not the cheapest gear around...well, he tried my guitar (ibanez grg170dx-ca) with his gear and it dounded pretty decent, with that gear most guitars probably sound good but he thought it had more metal charecter to it. So that seems to me yo be a somewhat decent starting point.

Now, I can't get the tone I want so I was wondering if any of you guys would be so kind to share your settings with me. Ampire settings and ir if you use non stock speakercabinet.

This would be great if someone would post a screencapture of their settings so that I could get atleast a good starting point and try to tweak it from there. I checked exchange but it doesn't seem to incluede any presets for the metal pack

Thanks!

EDIT: forgot to say that don't be afraid to share your epic bass tones, I can get pretty decent tones without ampsim but it would be cool to try going that route also sometimes

What kind of gear (mics, gtrs) are you using? Too much distortion when recording will probably cause a loss in clarity.

What kind of sounds are you trying to emulate? Maybe post some links to songs you would like the sound to be close to, and we can help from there. I don't use amp sims, nor do I record Metal by trade, but hearing what you want we can probably get you closer to where you need to be.

It actually sais in my post that I have an ibanez grg170dx-ca and it is with standard pickups. It also sais that I go with signachain gate, tube screemer and ampire xt metal pack. Everything processed in the computer that is.

The tone I'm looking for is kinda the bullet for my vallentine, avenged sevenfold typeish...todays metalgroup tone?

Honestly, I just bought the 5 buck metal tone and I really don't like it. S-gear with the wayfarer is a really good one that when matched with the basketweave cabs (included) is really hefty.

There are also good freeware (well, if you like it donate) options

http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com

If you are x64 that cab won't work you'll need the one from ignite audio:

http://www.igniteamps.com/en/audio-plug-ins

Then you can find ir's like this

http://www.freemusiciansresource.com/VST-detail/gods-cab-impulses/

It prolly sounds a bit complex but in the end I think you'll be happier with the tones.

for S&G's... i'll throw this one out since it is on sale for now. recently picked it up myself and and impressed with it and i don't buy into signature plug series plugins but this is exceptional for a quick fix on guitar tones. it is not expansive but a lot of times you need just a good quick tone. you may want to check it out.

Jay you know I am impressed too with that plugin, but it seems to me to be more old-school, what we would call heavy, don't think it will hit the mark for him out of the box, but may be able to enhance what he has already though (not using the reamp mode or what ever it is called) I have used it to just add a little to already recorded stuff. and it is great for that.

For that sound I tend to use Amplitube3 or Kaussa Crème, mind you the Fender collection in Amplitube3 has a nice metal amp. if I a, mic'ing up I use a Line DT 30 combo with something like a Soldano or ENGL type preset on my HD500 and work from there until I find the caverns of my darker ego

The preset "biz power" was a great 80's heavy tone, but as oldblood said, it's not what I'm hunting for right now.

something more like this Asking Alexandria - The Death of Me (OFFICIAL MUS…: http://youtu.be/Xl1lS6B9pMc

but I got a tip on recording di and it seems that my problem was to low incoming signal. Mine peaked at around -8db, but as I cranked it up to around -3db it opened the highs more.

The Youtube clip sound is obviously a detuned or drop D, quite scooped I would say and a doubled ( rhythm) guitar or widener helps give it that sound, but I am sure you know that anyway. Think I saw a Chris Lord-Alge clip somewhere on YT that explained a bit about that sort of tone, but for the life of me can't find the link, sorry

The thing is it is only you that will find the sound in your head, as long as you can get in the ball park with the type of gear (or amp sim) used by the artist/band and just mess with settings and experiment. Not much help but it will enable you to get your own signature sound, or go to start tone. This is why I have so many amp sims at my disposal, one doe not do it all. Currently I have Ampire of course, AmpliTube 3 (with all the collections), Guitar Rig 5, Kuassa Crème and Vermillion and Line 6 Pod Farm 2.5, and I still am waiting to get Scuffham S Gear when budget allows. I also use mic'd amps I have, being a Marshall Rig (to damn load though) Orange Tiny Terror, A old Peavey TG Raxx Tube Pre amp and as mentioned before Line 6 DT30 Combo. And I still have to hunt down the sounds I hear in my head sometimes

Now where is that MAGIC BUTTON AGAIN?

Yeah, but I'm down at drop c

as I posted I really suck at tweaking in distorted guitar tone...that is the reason for this thread, to get peoples settings to maybe get some ideas of where I sould be at.

When I record people in my studio I get to capture the tone from an amp with mics and pres, that feels mutch "easier" altough timeconsuming. But when I am by my self and start from scratch to record ideas I'd like to just plug in the guitar, choose presetchain and press record. When I got the metal pack earlier this week I started with some new ideas, but now I can't get the sound I want so I'm a little stuck. It kinda goes hand in hand inspiration and sound?

Well, anyways...I just thought there where other people on this forum that plays metal from todays timeline that also have the ampire xt metal pack and maybe wanted to share some presets.

And the key: once you get that "killer" sound for a song, make a note of it somewhere so you can find it later

well i tossed it out because it is cheap, good and can be tweaked. and you are right Clive... the re-amp presets are all old school for the most part. it ain't like my Amplitube 3 library which has almost 300 pieces now. the CLA is great for get up and go... and the waveform can be re-amped later if need be. i find it very usable... but hey... i am old. lol

I have applied the CLA plug to quite a bit of my old recordings to see what it does for them and in most cases it sweetens up to the point where I have left CLA in place.

Now the thing is if you have tone that is almost there whatever type/genre I would hand on heart say CLA will inch you that much closer to what you are after, thick it is the way that the EQ is tailored to guitar, as is the rest of it. So I will not put CLA down as being a cheap fix, its a damn good tool.

Yeah, so...Thanks for trying to help but really what I was trying to ask for was presets to the metal expansion for ampire. And yes, the tone in the video is what I look for but who can afford to go buy an axe-fx 2 just like that? Not me. I don't even want to put out money on another plugin.

I just wanted to know if somebody else on this forum has had any luck with a metal tone with the ampire metal pack and if so, could they share the presets/signalchain. Nothing else. I'm not looking into getting the tone with anything else but the tools I have. As presonus had their 5$ sale earlier this week I figured atleast someone else than me hooked on it and plays metal.
