My 1818 was working just fine when connected to my laptop with the USB cable. I purchased the external 18 volt power supply. Now my 1818 will not sync unless the power supply is connected. I've tried different cables and a different USB port and no luck.
Would someone please tell me why my 1818 won't sync unless I plug in the power supply? Thank you.
It is not a bus powered device. See the manual -- p. 8 -- requires the wall-wart to operate. If you got the sunce light before without it, it was probably a fluke.

It worked for about 4 months with just Bus power. When I needed phantom I plugged in the power supply. Since then Bus power alone would not sync it. Thanks for the advice.

If you got ANY type of functionality without using the power supply it was just dumb luck.
The unit was not designed to run on just bus power. As is CLEARLY stated in the MANUAL:

What's your point? I get the fact it needs a power supply.

The point is that the device will not sync until it is powered. It also will not sync until it is turned on. It cannot turn on until it is powered. Therefore it cannot sync without being powered which cannot happen via the USB connector only.
It isn't syncing because it is not turning on without the power adapter.

Duh! How many fluctuating times do you have to repeat it? I asked a simple question and got the answer.

One thing worth mentioning in general...Not all buses are created equal. OP says it worked on the bus alone (without power supply) for awhile. That doesn't surprise me (Though I don't recommend trying it. If the manual says use the AC adapter, you should do so).
Bus power will usually work if you're using an add-on USB or FW card that is connected to a power connector on the inside. (Again, not recommending anyone do this - just pointing out why it's able to get power).

Sorry if I offended anyone, it won't happen again. I first owned a 2 Channel PreSonus USB Audio Box and that was strictly Bus power. I thought my 1818 was the same since I've been using it for months without a Power Supply. Thanks for the help.

No worries. I can understand how you might have drawn that conclusion but its always a good idea to read the manual before attempting to use a complex piece of gear. Improper usage can often damage or destroy gear. That can be a very expensive lesson.
