I ditched cubase because of endless instability issues. If it takes until October or beyond to have 2.6 functional without issue then I'm happy to wait as long as it take. Give me working software not a rush release.

I'm assuming that they are knee deep in the 3.0 code at this point, but 2.6 will be out soon we just need to be patient.

that would be a big assumption. but since theres no proof or evidence that there even working on v3 it will only be an assumption. v2.6 is what they are currently working on.

You can't compare a cubase .x update to S1 updates. In my years of using cubase (since the time it was midi only until 2007) their .x updates were bug fixes. If you want to equate you have to use the following handicap.

Cubase 0.x =. No Presonus equivalent
Cubase X.0. = Presonus 0.x except cubase $200, Presonus free (Presonus update will include the few bug fixes that may be needed)
3 cubase X.0 updates = 1 Presonus x.0 update except you would spend $600 on cubase updates and $100 on Presonus

Now in the light of the increasing competition and apples release of Logic Pro X at $200 we may see some price point changes on the horizon for all DAWs, but the above while maybe slightly exaggerated has been my observation over the years. And to be fair until this release of logic X, that $200 was the price of their updates. And it may seem cheap for the entire DAW but if Logic XI comes out (in 5 years) and it's $200 whether you own X or not, it's just a new pricing strategy, only really cheaper for the first time buyer. I jumped in at logic 8 paid 200 for logic 9 and 200 for X. So for me it was a typical upgrade price point and double what it cost me to go from S1 1.6 to S1 2.0.

Likely.

A version 2 anything (?) without some idea or rough plan (8 months past 2.5?) of what they might want to put in v3 or not might be somewhat unusual unless the company was planning on going out of business.

Does it really even matter? Just asking.

Steinberg actually has been a bit more nimble with bug fixes than they had historically been, no doubt about that. People complained loudly and they responded with hotfixes and updates and stuff. That's a good thing for Cubase users.

I don't use Cubase anymore so they could publish an update every week and I wouldn't care very much.

Are we (just asking really) kinda "splitting proverbial hairs" here?

I posted a link to an interview with Matthias Juwan (from Jan / Feb I think, after 2.5 was in the wild) where he directly said they were planning some new stuff they couldn't talk about yet. I personally consider that planning "working", mmv, since it's part of the overall process.

Here it is, January of this year...
Q: Version 2.5 just came out. Are you already working on v 3.0?

Answer: Yes, we are thinking about it!

Q: What are you working on?

A: Unfortunately, I cannot comment on that!

http://en.audiofanzine.com/general-sequencer/presonus/studio-one-2-professional/editorial/articles/interview-with-the-father-of-studio-one.html

Anyway, just saying. I think those processes are always ongoing.

Sorry for the edits. I needed to correct some phrasing that was misleading.

You don't write code like ARA integration in a month or 2, so to think that they waited until v1.65 was fully cooked, and then turned around and said "whew, NOW we can start on that ARA thingie" is probably incorrect.

Software evolves over time, priorities reorganized, and market influences escalate timelines. Somewhere over in Hamburg, there is an S1 storyboard of sorts. Things are added, things are removed. Some things are categorized as "nice little feature adds", and some things are categorized as "Revenue Items". That is typically where the lines are drawn. There are features that the company wants in a charged update that have probably been around since V1, weren't developed enough to release in V2, so they wait for V3. There are probably categories on that story board that are proposed for V5, that may get upped in priority and come out in V4.

Bottom line is, no one but the development teams can say for sure, and that is how it should be. I personally don't want the developers themselves bangin around here all day answering questions (as much as I do enjoy Eike's humor). They have work to do......for us. Small companies that divulge proprietary information prematurely don't last very long.

Let's enjoy what we have, there is more coming, and it will be here when its ready. The ONLY thing that can prevent us from making music, is ourselves. I have NEVER heard an artist in an interview say "yeah, this album could have been better if my daw was able to XXXX". On the contrary, there are hundreds/thousands of stories of artists explaining a signature sound as "something I stumbled upon when trying to do something else". Having an 8 track limit didn't seem to hinder the Beatles much. Its a shame that the lack of a hardware reverb for drums they liked really hurt Zeppelin when they recorded When the Levee Breaks.

Now there are millions of kids out there, parents credit cards in hand, lining up to buy some music. Go get your piece of the pie.

Would you guys please stop picking on Bitwig?

Edit to "reorganize" my previous thoughts...

I just view it all differently I suppose. I look at it like building a ... well... a building. Before the construction workers and trailers and earth moving equipment show up on the site and start physically erecting the thing, there is a planning stage, and that's "work", to me. So if someone asks me if I think they're "working" on 3.0 I'd say... "very likely" (as a guess) ... in some capacity.

Not necessarily actually having a rough 3.0 alpha build on a development server or something. We obviously have no way to know that.

Do I think it's "possible" that there are already code forks with some potential 3.0 stuff in it? Maybe, dunno.
