Backstory:

So I've been meaning to buy some new speakers and start doing sound for bands other than my own. The speakers my band uses are not mine and are also crappy Carvins. I had a whole thread on choosing the QSC KW series and was totally prepared to pull the trigger.

Then NAMM happened. Now I want the new PreSonus speakers instead. But what to do? I had already told a friend that I would do sound for his band since his sound guy quit and they had gigs coming up. Enter Jon (AKA Mono).

Deeper story:

So initially, Jon offers to let me borrow some speakers to carry me over to when the PreSonus AI stuff is available. I'm in Central PA and he's in Jersey somewhere so it's a long drive but cheaper than renting. Next thing I know he says he'll just meet me at the first gig and we'll piece a system together from our collective PA gear.

Saturday:

Day of the gig arrives and I show up with my trailer in tow (I get about 10 MPG in my Subaru towing a trailer by the way). Jon shows up in a pickup truck. I'm a little scared at first, but he assures me all is well. I trust him and we move on.

So I ask what I need to bring in from my PA gear. He says we should just unload his stuff and see what else we need. To make an already long story somewhat shorter, in the end we used some of my drum mics on the toms and an insert snake to get the two keyboards to their respective DIs. That's it. The rest was all Jon.

Hookup time. I helped a bit, when I wasn't in Jon's way.

Then comes time to dial everything in. All Jon.

Running sound all night? Jon.

Figuring out that the whole band area was on a single 20 amp breaker and we had to kill the band lights to do the gig? Jon.

Telling people to stop turning down the lights because the band couldn't see? Jon.

(My favorite) Setting up initial monitor mixes while with the band members who were outside smoking? Jon.

Making this band - which has been around since the 80's - sound better than I ever heard them sound? All Jon.

Feeling useless? Matt

No moral or anything here. Just a great night and I was glad to finally meet Jon in person. And I'll leave you with my favorite exchange from the night:

Miscellaneous groupie to Jon: Are you with the band?

Jon: Nope. I'm too tall and good looking to be with them.

What a great story!

Running sound for events is about 50% sound and 60% dealing with everything else.
I'm sure you learned a lot just watching, but your gonna need to DO all those things eventually.

It's hard to imagine someone so helpful. What a lucky community PreSonus is to have him.

I hope you paid him in Bacon! Lots and Lots of crispy bacon!

The funny thing is the one guy in the band I know the least kept asking me if I was learning anything. Of course I was learning new and different things, but it was funny to me because I know how to run sound, although admittedly not as good as Jon. If Jon hadn't stepped in in such a big way, it would have just been me back there. Just struck a funny bone with me the way he asked me that.

Sadly, I did not pay Jon in bacon, although I will put the offer out there to buy him bacon whenever he wants. Maybe in May when he once again offered to come up to help me run sound for a PA Wounded Warrior benefit my band is playing at...

I like to think that if the roles were reversed, and they may well be someday, that you'd do the same for me or any of the other forum guys that you can do this for.

You're actually the second guy from the forum that I've run sound for in the last month or so.

And as far as the "all Jon" stuff. Melvis was not as useless as he would let you believe. I made very good use of his skills and we managed to teach each other a few new tricks here and there. I just know my rig inside and out and its faster for me to run my rig.

And you know you've got my assistance until you don't need it any more. It was a good night with a really good band. The Floyd solos made me smile a lot. Love it when I can get that dialed in just right.

You should have danced with your wife while you had the chance though. Opportunity like that can get fewer and farther between as the years roll.

Besides what was I supposed to do? Sit at my house and watch cartoons in my bacon pajama pants and wife beater...nope....being a sound guy is too much fun.

I would definitely do the same.

And yes, I exaggerated a bit, but not that much.

As far as dancing, that was too fast of a slow song for us. But you're right - I should have thought of it sooner. Just felt weird asking you to help and then leaving you to eat/dance.

As I said - you're welcome at any of my gigs any time. You're good people...

I love the community... It's great to see the ethics and morals of the group, helping each other out.

I hope to be able to do the same at some point for someone on here. For now, sharing the knowledge will have to do!

Kudos to Jon for showing us how it's done way to go Mono

Kind of... More central VA.

But I'm up for just about anything. It's a little difficult with my second kid due in May and my first only 16 months but here are some vitals:

I do have an 8k watt PA (eight Yamaha Club V 15", four Club V 18" subs)
Crown XTi power for the mains
5 independent wedges (two 15" and three 12")
slightly older power for the wedges a crest and two crowns
plus either four mono IEMs or two Stereo IEMs available - Sennheiser EW300s
two 100' 16X4 snakes one with XLR and the other with 1/4" returns
Lots of cabling
four blue vocal mics two 200s two 300s
Shure drum mics
blue sparks for drum OH

And there are more odds and ends but thats the basic

could make for some fun shows

You know it Melvis!!!

In the fine spirit of this thread, I am ready willing and able to help anyone I can in The Maryland, DC, Northern VA aria.
(but almost all my Saturdays are booked already )

It takes a village....lol

I certainly plan on asking for some help when I can get a dam Mac already!!
Perhaps fewer trips to the Bacon store would speed things up.

When you get a Mac let me know. I'm still learning but I could teach you the few things that let me get around being used to Windows my whole life. Well, my whole life since Windows came out. Is it funny to say I'm older than Windows?

As far as all of these locations, I've gone as far south as SC, as far North as Mass, as far East as Qatar (looong story) and as far West as Illinois to run sound. I like to travel. So if anyone needs the assist I'm always available.

This is the kind of thing this forum has been about since I got here. As individuals we each have skills and some items but as a group, working together we have the ability to do just about anything.

I can't count how many times I've offered up one of my mixers or an amp or something to someone on here because some part of their system had to be serviced or replaced in a very short amount of time.

It truly is all about the community. At least as far as I can tell.

I went and helped a fellow forum user with a gig last summer. It's always nice to help out when we can.! Now I'm a bit off the beaten path way up here in northern Minnesota, so jumpin in the truck and heading out to the east coast MIGHT be a bit of a stretch ...
