I've just purchased a StudioLive 16.0.2 (very impressed) and I'm new to recording using a PC. I'm considering buying a new laptop and possibly a new desktop because I assume my current PC's are too old/slow. Nevertheless I would like do to some testing on my current Dell Dimension E520 (XP) PC and my Current Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. Can I install the software twice? And if I buy a new PC, can I install it again?

I understand that I can install the software 5 times. I'm planning on testing it on my (old) Dell Dimension E520 desktop. I think the performance will not be too good so I probably will be buying a new desktop and sell or throw away the old E520 (obviously with software REMOVED). Does that copy still count and can I reinstall that copy on another (new) PC using the activation key that I used previously on the PC that I'm no longer using. Hoping for "yes" but I'm thinking "no".

What if the PC crashes and I have to reinstall the software. Would that require a new activation key as well (I guess that's the same question). All my software is legal, I'm not looking for any ways to scam the license, I'm just a bit worried that installing the software on my older PC's might not be a good idea if I loose 2 installations with that.

If you have to scrap a system and need the license back just contact tech support. They can get you fixed back up.

And technically, the five install are there for these types of cases. The fine print is that you can have S1 installed and running on two machines simultaneously (such as a live rig and a studio rig). The other three installs are there in case something fails or the computer doesn't play nice.

Hope that clarifies it a bit.

Understood, thanks! I think that's fair. I think I will install it on the old E520 then, just to see if and how it runs. My 520 has a (pretty old) firewire 400 PCI card, I read there are compatibility issues with newer firewire (800?) hardware so we'll see. First thing a need is a decent laptop with firewire so that will be installation number 2. I'm not planning on having it on more computers than 2 (like you said). I noticed that laptops merely have a very small (6 pin??) connector that's not included in the box. I reckon that's just a matter of a (conversion) cable?

If I'm not mistaken, the mini connector is actually 4 pin. It lack power, but since the StudioLive has it's own power, it's not necessary. Your biggest concern is a computer or expansion card with a compatible FW chip. There are other threads that can guide you there, or find a mac, which will just work. There are options starting around $500.
