..and I feel so stupid as I've never had trouble before grasping a concept.
I've watched the Preosnus video on YouTube which basically teaches nothing - it just boasts how good "our comping feature now is."

I've got four vocal takes on a track and I've copied them to layers. If I put the focus on the 'main' track and look in 'Layers' in the Inspector there are four in the list. So all four takes exist in the one trackas well as in the expanded layers?? Ok, if I select "1" the three expanded layers below the track say 2, 3 and 4. (If I select "2" the ones below say 1, 3 and 4. How does that help me?)
I can see that if I left click drag a section in one of the three grey layers below the actual track then it turns green - so does that mean that's what I'm hearing? I can't drag anywhere in the main track as that will just move events, so how do I select part of take 1 in the main track to be what I'm hearing? Also, if I try to 'undrag' a selected secion in one of layers 2-4 it highlights another secion instead in the layer below - but I don't want that!!!

I could have done all this ten times over by now by doing what I usually do - recording each take on a new track, then inserting a 'keep' track and cutting and pasting best bits from other take tracks into it.

I'm obviously missing something bih here. Has anyone who does this regularly got some simple pointers? Many thanks.

To answer one of your questions: yes, if you "swipe" in a layer, then that selected section of that layer is "promoted" to the main track that you hear. You can see the sections that are promoted as highlighted sections in each layer.

I'm sure there are more videos on that feature than the one you have seen, too. Do some digging and you'll find one that will help you get going.

Dig into the manual as well. Comping means creating one composite recording out of multiple takes. Section by section, choosing the best performance, making it active by promoting it.

You don't manually copy your takes to layers, it happens automatically while loop recording. Use the listen tool to listen to a take section before swipe promoting it.

Thanks guys. Thanks themuzic, that's a much more informative video on the auditioning process which was the bit confusing me.

I have a question. With the listen tool does it start playback from a user defined point on the event or doors it automatically play back from the start of the event. What if you only want to audition the last bar of a four bar section?

Oh, I see. It plays back from where you click.

Sorry for my first answer. I got confused because you said "doors"
