Hello All. Left my board on for probably a few hours, previous to which it seemed like it was working perfectly. I ran an update to the firmware to match UC 1.7 and it was still working great. Then when I came back the controls were not responding. I tried to reboot and then only the LCD would light. No buttons or meters, etc. were lit. I was guessing it was a heat related issue with the power supply, so I shut it off and came back several hours later, and sure enough, everything was working again. The board was sitting on a flat, hard surface, and the ambient temp, was between 65 and 70; nothing out of the ordinary.

I realize this will probably need to be sent in, but thought I double check if anyone had any ideas.

Thanks a lot,
Matthew

I believe the first thing I would try is re-flashing the firmware. There have been many strange issues reported on these boards after a bad firmware update. I haven't seen this issue and you may be right about a bad component overheating, but before I sent it in, I would force a reload of the latest firmware and see if that fixes it. If not, try reverting to the prior firmware version. If that fixes it, then you have isolated it to the firmware. If it is still behaving this way, send it in.

I would try to troubleshoot it as much as possible before resorting to sending it in.

Thanks, I'll try that, Jerry. Yeah, I thought it was at least worth a try troubleshooting. Doesn't look very promising, though.

I just experienced this problem last night. So far, it has not started working again but I have not tried it yet today. I was just wondering how you came out on this.

I bought a dead 16.4.2 for half price to repair myself. One drop of solder and the input rectifier was all it needed. An unsoldered joint like this will be intermittent and come and go due to temp amd humidity changes. Took about 1/2 hour to open, find the problem, and fix. Working on switching power supplies that run off the mains power is dangerous without proper skill and equipment such as an isolation transformer. It would be interesting to know what they find in your units... IF it is the same as mine, inspection of the power supplies from their vendor is in order.

This simple problem could be the answer to these field failures some have had.

I got my 24.4.2 back from Presonus. It seems to be working fine now. They told me that it was a defective control surface PCB. I'm curious as to whether any of the power supply resides on that board. Mine is still under warranty so they coverered the repair. That's also why I'm reluctant to open it up myself to see what makes it tick.

The power supply is a totally separate module. The dead board I bought was WITHOUT warranty. I own a lot of equipment that I bought as defective and repaired. One does need a well equiped shop to diagnose and repair stuff. Power supplies are easy, however main boards are usually beyond field repair. I have replaced some small surface mount components at times... Usually nothing over 16 pin chips.

Unlees it's a larger cap or something, I usually don't touch the surface mount stuff. You really need to have the right equipment for that. Now my understanding is that the repaired or replaced parts have another full year warranty on them. Not the whole mixer.

Yes, surface mount repair requires special equipment AND materials. It is not fun to do. Some of the materials are expensive like the solder paste and the alloying solder to lower the melting point for removal.

When you have a console repaired (even if totally out of warranty) you get a full year on the whole product! I have verified this with Presonus...

Best regards
