Just a thought, is there any plans to have an RTA added to the board? Perhaps use the talkback input as the RTA input? I pretty much use an open channel for my TB anyways. But just a thought..

err... there is a smaart RTA since the last upgrade to UC version 1.6.

I know what you´re trying to say - you want to adapt your pa to the room with pink noise.

A few weeks ago there was a thread in this forum where someone described a workaround to achieve that.

Don´t know exactly when and by whom; just have a look.

Watch for a system tuning thread to appear very soon. We're going to teach you some cool things that can be done with that RTA! Did you know that all room modes terminate in dihedral corners? Gotta get my time back before we start it, though.

Actually I was hoping for an RTA separate from computer software, just in the board, would be nice to help locate problem frequencies if you're in a standalone gig...but I do plan on a Mac Mini Server soon, so may not have to worry.

How could I have forgotten those room modes? Lol, just kidding, I'll keep an eye out, definitely will help me when I can finally get a Mac Mini!

DJIceman, why do you want to go with a Mac mini? I have thought a lot about getting one, but only for price reasons. My gut is saying go with a MacBook Pro. But I would like any info that may steer me to a Mac mini. I have even been all over figuring out how to use my ipad to control the mini with a VNC. (Sorry to change the subject a little)

I think we have a communication problem here...SMAART RTA/spectrum analyzer HAS been implemented in VSL 1.6. This allows for you to see what the output spectrum or RTA output of the console is. It also allows you to use the RTA/spectrum display to see what the room is doing to your sound, but only if you know what it is SUPPOSED to look like BEFORE the room is added to the mix. THAT is what Mikey is referring to.

Stay tuned...

Hello all. The talk-back input is going to be the input for the upcoming Smaart system analysis wizards. Yes, there is a workaround for using a channel and an RTA microphone for during-the-show snapshots of that microphones frequency content by sacrificing a GEQ output. However, the information garnered from such a procedure is system independent and has no way of telling you how the room is affecting the sound coming out of the console. As far as not using a computer and still being able to view an RTA....the little bitty screen on the console is not designed or intended to facilitate that function.

For system tuning, an RTA is inferior to more advanced measurement tools; namely the transfer function, or FFT analysis. The reason being, and the common misconception, is that an RTA is able to view its middle name...Time. In fact, that is where an RTA falls short. The RTA can't compare itself to anything, doesn't know where it's signal has been, or where it's going, so it can't discern between direct and reflected energy. Dual channel measurements compare the output of the console, to the output of the system. Because they are matched in time (a process in Smaart called 'delay tracking', or 'find/insert delay' - one of the steps that the wizards do for you), the analyzer is able to show exactly what happens to the signal as it passes through the system and interacts with the environment. The wizards coming in 1.7 incorporate dual channel FFT measurement by way assisted automated processes. You will be able to set a system Eq with a reasonable amount of precision that was previously unachievable without purchasing a stand alone FFT analyzer.

For those who may not have realized it, Chrisatrational is one of the Rational Acoustics gurus.

Had a very good chat with him at Presonusphere and a few other chats at the bar in the Indigo.

Very nice guy and very very knowledgeable.
