Hi All. I guess I'm joining (or maybe starting) the Rice Crispy Club. I put in a ticket, but thought I'd post my issue here as well, at least as a record of it, though it doesn't seem people have had much luck with it. Here's all the background on my troubleshooting I can think of.

I recently purchased the AudioBox 1818VSL and it works great with just VSL running, and seems to be fine when I start S1-2 Artist by itself, but once I try to use them together, any audio that is routed through S1 has a constant crackling. A prerecorded aiff played back cleanly. All software and firmware is up-to-date. I tried AB VSL 1.2.1 as well and had the same result. I have gotten the same result on two different MacBooks, one running Snow Leopard and one on Lion, both up-to-date. Both Macs are "Santa Rosa, Late 2007" models, with 4 GB in each.

I have tried various sample rate and buffer settings all with the same (or worse) result. One thing that seemed odd is that StudioOne's sample rate remained constant regardless of being changed in the VSL app or Apple's Audio/Midi settings app. I don't know if that is what is supposed to happen or not.

I also noticed Studio One was running in 32 bit on both comps, but switching that to 64 bit showed no improvement (maybe a little worse). The computers cannot boot into 64 bit mode, although the terminal check does show a 64bit EFI.

Try quitting and then reopening VSL (switched to "off") anytime you hear noise while working in S1 DAW.

Just got another reply from tech support (after a few troubleshooting attempts) who said, "This is an issue we have been working on." Which is fine, really; I rather not keep beating a dead horse if it's a known issue.
Also said to try the safe mode and a powered usb hub. Safe mode didn't help. I guess I'll dig up my hub.

Boy...that's a big admission on their part...!
Curious...what do you have your StudioOne's DEVICE BLOCK SIZE (buffer samples) and SAMPLE RATE (kHz) set to?

I've tried them all, as far as I know, but I think I'm trying to get 44.1Khz and about 256 samples to work (lower buffer would, of course, be better). If I get up to around 512 the pop become a little less evident, but any are too many. Plus, it's just not usable live, which is the whole point, for me. All I really want to do is add a bass amp and maybe a guitar amp. Doesn't look very promising at the moment.

That really sucks. I'm successfully using my AB1818 for LIVE SOUND work and have stumbled across (thru trial & error) a VSL/S1 setting to resolve those kind of noise issues, even at low latency settings. (I forgot to ask...is your wifi turned OFF?)

If you list your specific Software & Hardware configuration in your USER PROFILE, other FORUM members may be able to help you more than I can. Just a suggestion.

What bluesriff said. Knowing that info goes a long way into troubleshooting.

Yes...recently bought the 1818vsl...downloaded latest driver and installed...im getting awful crackling noises when playing back a midi file connected to my ketron sound module via midi out on 1818vsl. i use samplitude pro x suite and pro tools 10 and this crackling is the same when i use either of these daws....i tried different sample rates and buffer sizes also..but no use.....i have various interfaces....ROLAND QUAD-CAPTURE, MBOX2,M-AUDIO FAST TRACK PRO AND M-AUDIO FAST TRACK ULTRA 8R..and every thing works perfect when using any of the mentioned interfaces...i bought this 1818 because i use a pc (win 7 sp1) and its usb...also because it has adat facility...my computer is tashiba satellite a250 with 4G RAM

What is this "issue", really? I have huge problems with clicks and pops and are getting help from tech support but I am beginning to fear that it will not be solved.

I am very concerned about this. I have a project in a couple of weeks. Will I have to buy a different interface?

Hey all,
I thought I'd chime in here, I had the same issues with my 1818 when I first got it.
Tried every every combination of buffer and driver setting, new usb controllers, IRQ settings, cables, ect
What finally worked for me was a fresh install of the OS.
Sometimes an operating system just gets messy (windows and mac) and the only thing to do start from scratch.
I know its a pain but your computer will thank you for it in the long run.

What fixed my 44VSL clicking and popping was two things: using Safe mode (which on my Windows laptop required using the 1.1 drivers), and disabling the 1394 (firewire) networking drivers. Safe mode took care of part of it, and disabling the firewire networking fixed the rest.

Does anybody actually use firewire networking?
