Ok this was a bummer!!!! Music stopped twice! Running Wavelab on a laptop. I have 6 songs in the window. When I want a song I just highlight the song and hit play. The song just stopped on two separate songs. Not the audio engine! The songs just stopped. I could and did just hit the space bar and continued on the band and the crowd had a laugh but DOH! We were lucky we got back inline with the click fast enough! I have never seen this before in wavelab and I have used it for years. Question: what are you using for a player? WMP is a pain as I really like to see the waves. I will go through it here at home tonight. Just wanting some different Idea's!!!!! Thanks!!!!

Well, there are a lot of options.

Basically any DAW will do the trick.

If you go the DAW route, you want something lightweight and stable. I recommend giving Reaper a try.

You could probably use foobar2000 if you want to go the media player route - I bet there's a plugin for it that shows wave overviews.
Live intentionally.

I will look at Foobar right now. Really the only reason I want to see the wav is so that I can see FOR SURE that the song is cued to the start ASAP. That is one of the reasons I was using WL. Highlightimg the song and hitting start takes around 4 seconds. Thanks for the info!!!

Are you using a StudioLive? How about Capture? You can can set markers and use the "N"(next) and "B"(back) keys to change tracks. Spacebar stops and starts.

We run a Boss RC-300 for our backing tracks. It works great. We also run a click track out of it for the drummer. It's on the bass players pedal board. He can control all of it with his feet.

But, for something free, I have seen guys running sound for a major country tour using iTunes on an iPad.

Here's an app that stops play back after each track, which I imagine would be important to you.

For a really simple music player have a look at XMPlay:
- open source, completely free
- small and light, no need to install
- lots of plug-ins available, including an ASIO output plug-in (to avoid WDM)
- lots of skins available (I like Neutron)
- lots of visualisation plug-ins available too (including spectrum and 3D spectrum)
- hotkeys 100% user-configurable

Thanks guys! The problem with WL was it was jumping drivers. Having the autostop on dropout caused it to stop. WL doesn't have a return cursor to the start of a track that I can find which is a pain. I would like to eliminate that step so I will try a few of your ideas!!! Thanks again!

I have been using Show Cue System for a couple of years now as I do a lot of shows that require either sound FX or backing tracks.
Only problem is, it is windows only so Mac folks would need to run Parallels or set up Boot camp.

Have you tried this program in conjunction with SL Remote using an iPad? This is just what I am looking for. If you could run both that would be great! I just bought a Macbook Pro for backing tracks because I got fed up with 2 different pc's screwing up in the middle of the show. However this App isn't made for a Macbook. I do use an iPad 2 for SL remote so if I could run both apps I could move the Macbook to FOH.

Edit It looks like the ipad will NOT run an external usb audio box so I am prolly back to wave lab and the MBP. I just can't trust the 1/8 inch jack on any device for stage use. I have a pretty nice Rapco 1/8 to XLR stereo box if anybody is interested. Dang it I would have loved to move the MBP to FOH.

I use this a lot http://www.audiobytes.eu/en/products/pid001/index.php.
Easy to control, it looks very professional, certainly in show mode, and its free.
The only "downside" for some is that you have to make your cues in advance. For others, that is
an advantage, because of less possibilities for errors.

My only issue with VDJ is I don't like the EQ 3-knob format (H / M / L). I prefer a GEQ instead. Although now that I have the AudioBox 1818 VSL, I can control the EQ for the backing track in AudioBox VSL

I wrote a program to play Backing Tracks.

A friend of mine asked me if I could write a small program,
with which he can play his backing tracks on a macbook.

He wanted to have auto pause, and a second player for the musical break.

The "Playback Player" stops after one Song and goes to the next Song.
(You can skip Pause, see Right Click Menu)

The "Break Player" plays all Songs continuously.
You can use a different Volume Setting in the "Break Player".

If anyone is interested, it can be downloaded here.

OSX
OSX Version english
Windows
Windows Version english

It can be used from an usb-stick, without Installation.

I have a couple of bands that use the iphone for trax playback, in fact one has pretty much his whole show on it. This does require a hardline to the phone but he has it right there on a holder on the mic stand anyway, so that's not a big deal, another has a small table I made them out of an old tripod mic stand.

Another uses digital performer and he is a one man show that has all his backing tracks, lighting changes, announcements, break music. He has costume changes and all built right into the show. The whole show is on it and he just plays along on various instruments..
