I met with a mastering engineer for a tutoring session the other day.

I want to pick some brains here....he recommended that I do a mixdown, update master files, etc in 24 bit and only create the 16 bit WAV file at the final CD burn process, so as not to lose any of the dynamics and nuances of the song.

So, I experimented last night. I enjoy the StudioOne project integration with the StudioOne mixing and its ability to update the master file when there is a change to the mix. But, the automated update of the master always defaults to 44,100/16. I searched everywhere, but I couldn't find where to change the default to 44,100/24.

I CAN go into the mix and do a Mixdown to Audio File at 44,100/24, then go back into the Project window and import this file into the project. However, I lose the version control/seamless integration by doing this, and it takes much longer to do this. I have noticed a slightly better quality sound by going this route, but I am not sure if its really worth the effort.

Can anybody provide some suggestions?

Thanks,
Rob

Dang I am doing the same thing and did not realize that they are 16-bit files. Bummer.
Thanks

Thanks

It says its going to be 32 bit, but check the properties of the file in your browser panel in your Project window. Highlight the master WAV file that you just updated, then look at the bottom of panel where it tells you the info of the file (date, bit rate, etc). It will say 16 bit.

I just checked mine. When I select the mastering file in the S1 browser the info at the bottom of the browser says the file 44.1k 24-bit stereo wave file. The file is songname-master.wav and I did a show in explorer from the project to be sure I was looking at the proper file. When I look at the properties in windows explorer it show the bit rate of 2116kbps for the wave file.

I do agree there is an issue because the update master file dialog in the song window says it's going to be 32-bit.
Thanks

So, your's is doing what it should, but mine is not. I am looking at my songname-master.wav file, and it shows 16 bit.

My question still stands, then. Where can I find how to configure the songname-master.wav file to do 24 instead of 16?

I am using Studio One 1.5.1 on an iMac. Snow Leopard OS 10.6

Thanks for your help.

Very strange. Either this is a bug that only shows up under certain conditions or there is a setting somewhere you have not set up correctly. This is what I see at the foot of S1's browser...

Are you sure you are looking in the "Master" folder? Can you post a screenshot?

I have just updated another song with the Song > Update Mastering file... command and gone straight into the Project browser to check the updated file...it is a 32bit / 44 file which matches the settings I have in my Song Set up here...

..what settings dd you have there?

Thanks for the quick reply. I am not at home right now, so I will post the screen shot and my steps when I get home tonight.

Thanks

What are the Project settings when you create it? Is it a 44.1/16bit Project? If so, the master files you are creating are automatically converted to match the Project settings when imported into the Song...in this case it's all automatic, so you don't see it happening.

Yep, it's definitely the song settings. Automatic update defaults to the resolution your song is set to.

That might be my problem. Is there anyway to change the settings after the project has been created? Or should I just create a new project, change the settings, then bring in the songs?

Jonathan, there is no bit depth setting for Projects (only sample rate). It always takes what it gets and exports to whatever you specify.

So I'd like to emphasize the Song Setup once more ...

Where, by the way, you can change the bit depth afterwards at any time.

So if you need to master someone elses files that are lower bit rate you need to create a new song and drop the file into it and then change it's settings to the higher bit-rate and mix that down to master.
Thanks

1. One way is just to upload files to Imageshack for instance.

2. Then copy the url for the uploaded image into a post.

3. Select the image url in you post.

4. Then hit the "Img" (Image) button in the post header (between the "List" and "URL" button)

5. Hit the Preview button to make sure the image is visible. Then click on Submit.
