Hi all, won these in an auction yesterday, and feel pretty good about it, based on all the info I could find, but one thing still bothered me a little; the pouch. It just doesn't look like any I've seen that are known to be genuine. I have heard that the Shure pouches are coming from china now; maybe that's it? Probably just paranoid, but I've been lucky way too long, and am probably due. . . lol And yes, I know evil-bay is not the best place to buy certain mics; it was a calculated risk, and I'm more than prepared to handle whatever outcome.
What do you all think? It's a pretty high resolution file, so it might be worth downloading to get a better look.
Thanks a lot,
Matthew

Chinese copies are a real possibility on ebay these days. I have a first hand experience. I cannot tell from looking at your pictures to help you. But I can give you an example of how bad things are.

My band needed an extra Beta58, so the guitarist decided to get it. We had already discussed counterfeit copies on ebay, but he must have forgotten about that. So it arrived and all seemed well. Until.....

First gig, set the mic up, and it seemed ok. Until that is we couldn't get the foldback to settle down. Loads of 1k squeals all the time. The foldback is already tuned so it should have been ok.

We found out it WAS a counterfeit copy. I suggested he get his money back if he could, and the most bizzare thing was, the seller didn't even want the mic back. So we got out of it without loss.

One of the more amazing things about this copy was that the box and manual were perfect. But the mic was simply a cheap omni capsule in a transformerless chassis. It felt lighter than the original, and the color of the blue band was slightly different.

Apparently you can get a copy of most things in China these days, all the way up to BMW cars. Fender strats, Gibson Les Pauls, all ripped off. So be very careful on ebay.

ya man there's TONS of fake shure's out there. and if you put one up against a legitimate mic, it's noticeable. i work at a music store and we see fake Shure mics pretty regularly.

buy legit from an authorized dealer. you don't get the same sound, and you don't get a warranty. no matter what the seller says. ps - my music store is an authorized shure dealer if you're interested ...

These fake shure mics are so damn good looking you cannot tell if it´s a fake at first glance. Even the weight is correct. But there is a way to check if a shure mic is genuine (never checked other brands). When you remove the capsule there are wires that go from the capsule into the handheld part (don´t know the correct term). With genuine mics there are three wires of different colour. With fake mics there are only two wires and they are almost every time all in the same colour (in most cases white).

I learned that from a friend who works at a local music store.

So - just unwind the capsule and you can tell.

Unfortunately the one I bought on a fleamarket was a fake...

I've bought a lot of good stuff on fleamarkets. I don't know how these markets are around your place, but in Germany they are quite big and much more than people selling their garbage.

Twice a year there is a huge musician's fleamarket at one of the biggest music stores in Germany where musicians sell (and buy) used stuff. You can buy a complete pa system there if you want to.

The lesson I learned is to look twice especially when the bargain sounds too good to be true...

If it's too good to be true, then, well, it's too good to be true!

Still hasn't stopped me from hopping on that train several times though

Thanks for the input folks. When I get them we'll see. Regardless of the outcome, I'll continue to troll ebay/craigslist for deals. I was inventorying my gear last week, and was happy to see I've saved thousands just by being patient and waiting for the right deal. I think if someone understands the risks and does their homework, they can easily come out on top. And while I think ebay is a horrible place to sell most things, their policies really do favor the buyer, and the risk is mitigated quite a bit.

Hi all. Probably not even worth bumping this, but I said I'd give an update, and I'm happy to report no issues with the mics. They are like new, actually. Didn't exactly steal these, at $150, but considering the condition, I am very pleased. Thanks again for the input.

For anyone who is interested, I found this while looking at recording videos on uTube. It shows a fake 57 and a real 57, including box.
