The Studio One Tips thread is back. Loads of quick tips taken from various threads from Studio One users around the forum. Some of the images required an update for consistency as some features have changed in places since the last time the tips were posted in the previous S1 Tips thread. The new tips thread has been created this time with more posts that are easier to manage for me as time goes on. The old thread was fine but some of the earlier posts were a bit long. Some things you learn from experience

Purpose of the Studio One Secrets thread:

Quick tips and tricks in one place. The first parts of the thread are categorized for easy reference for new users in particular but from then on it's open ended for easy forum user participation and posting from everyone So please do share your tips

Note: Studio One Version 2 tips start on page 12 here

Start Page Part 1

1. Under the Setup area of the Start page you can click on the "Check for Updates" command to bring this box up...

From here you can get basic information on the current version of Studio One with a download button to get hold of the very latest version (if you current version is not up to date).

2. You can also quickly see what version of Studio One is running if you look at the foot of the Start Page...

Start Page Part 2

1. Studio One can Scale an image if it is too big for the Start Page Artist Profile image box. You can still see a larger image though by simply placing your mouse cursor over the scaled image. S1 will show a magnifying glass which you can use to open a larger version of Artist Profile Image.

2. Click on the "Configure Audio Device..." command to access Studio One's Options menu. You can easily access other options to set Plugin VST paths e.t.c from the Options area as well.

3.
Perhaps for Trouble shooting purposes or other you can access the messages you see when Studio One starts up at any time. Just go to "View" > "Messages" to see the list. From there you can clear the list or save the list.

4. If you do not already have a Song or Project loaded into Studio One you can start a new Song or Project by simply clicking on the Song or Project buttons (Top right of the Start Page).

5. A small drop down arrow will appear next to the Song and Project buttons if you have a Song or Project loaded. This will show a drop down list of currently loaded Songs or Projects. Click on these lists to choose which Song or Project has focus.

Song Page Part 1

Song management

1. You can use the "Close" command to close any Song that is in focus. With the "Close" command (Ctrl + W) only the current visible Song is closed and Studio One will keep running / stay open. If you use the "Close All" command you will be taken back to the Start Page.

2. Even if you have one Song open and use the "File" > "Close" command PS1 will simply close that Song and take you to the Start Page.

3. If you use the "File" > "Quit" command (or the Close / X button for the whole Window...top right of any open application in Windows) PS1 will likely ask you if you want to save changes for each open Song before closing the application completely.

4. You can save a New version of your Song with the "Save New version..." command. This will place a new version of Song in the History folder for your Song. If you browse to your Song folder you will see a History folder there if you have saved a new version.

5. You can drag this new version into S1's arrangement view and S1 will immediately load up that version of your Song.

6. You can alternatively use the File > Restore Version... command to bring up this box and select your version from there....

7. Save As will allow you to Save your song file where you want and rename it.

8. File > Save to New folder" creates a completely new self contained folder for all your Media, History Cache and related Song files.

Timeline

1. Watch the position of your "End Marker".

It might be off screen and might make your bounce time longer than it needs to be if you select the "Mix Down to Audio File..." command or "Export Audio to Tracks command and choose "Between Start/ End Marker" as an option when bouncing or exporting your Song / tracks.

2. To see your whole Song (all events horizontally) right click on the Timeline to access a command to "Fit Timeline to Contents" You can also "Insert Time Signatures" from the same menu.

2. You can also of course click in the space between the horizontal bar and the small arrows for another variation of horizontal scrolling.

3. You can still zoom with the "Time Zoom" feature (below the red arrow in the image below).

4. More incremental movements left or right can be achieved be clicking on the very small arrows either side of the area where that bar resides (under the green arrows in the image).

Events - Nudge

1. Select the Event/s you want to nudge

2. Hold down Alt and tap the Left Arrow key to nudge Left and the Right Arrow key to nudge event/s to the right.

A few other Nudge related points...

1. You can Nudge Audio or Midi events

3. You can group (drag over to select) Midi notes and Nudge them collectively.

4. The Nudge function will obey / follow your quantize settings

Displays

1. You can get a much larger time display by simple going to View > Time display.

2. You can change the Display type in the larger floating Time Display by clicking in the lower half of the second display on the Transport (the slightly larger time display that is right next to the transport play, stop rewind e.t.c controls).

Simply choose from the options there to change the display. The Larger floating Time Display will also change to match the values shown.

4. You can also use the Select Device button to quickly switch between any VSTi plugins you have loaded in your Song. In the image below I can easily switch between the PreSonus plugs or Omnisphere simply by clicking on that list.

5. You can also scroll through the Select Device listings should you wish to with your mouse wheel. You should do this without the list of devices being visible. Simply place your cursor over the Select Device button and then move your scroll wheel.

6. Go to View > Performance Monitor to see a larger CPU and Disc Meter. You can see meters for Instruments, Automation as well as a Cache indicator.

Song Page Part 10

Console

1. You can see mini meters in the Screen by right clicking a track entry (in the Screen Window) and going to View > Levels. These smaller meters can be used to get a quick over view of tracks with active signals.

2. You can drag down across your mixer strips in the "Screen" to hide tracks you do not want to see.

3. The icons below the Screen mixer window can also be used to hide / show track types.

4. At the bottom of the screen shot below you can also see presets for the Screen. Saving a Preset there will save the Screen State (effectively the Mixer view state as well).

So you can easily save and recall all sorts of Mixer views by saving them in the Screen and recalling them whenever you want. Want to call up a Screen state for the Mixer with just your Sends visible? Or maybe you just want to quickly see all your drum parts for a quick overview of their levels or a more focused mixing session? Hide them in the Screen, hit the plus button and enter a name for it. Hit Ok. Hitting the minus button deletes the preset.

Console Continued...

5. A few things you should be aware of. At the moment Screen / Mixer state presets are saved with a Song and are only saved when a Song is saved. This means you cannot use your Screen Presets in other Songs and if you create a few presets for the screen and do not save your Song before closing it, you will lose those Screen Presets. Something to be mindful of.

6. When the smaller view is used in the mixer each track will have two small indicators. The one on the left will light up if FX are present on that channel...the one on the right will also light up if Sends are present on that channel.

It means at a glance you can see if there are any FX or Sends on a channel without expanding the channel strip to see them. This means you can have the Console visible but...get some more screen space for the Arrange View.

7. A simple click on the small arrow next to these indicators will show or hide the Inserts or FX next to the Track strip in the mixer.

8. The Studio One Console can auto scroll. If the track you want to see is not visible in the mixer just go to the Screen and select the track you want to see there, right click then select "Show in Console" the Mixer will auto scroll to get it into view.

9. You can also go to Track > Show in Console to get the Console to Auto scroll if the track you have selected is not immediately visible.

Console Continued...

10. If you delete an FX insert or even an instrument it will not be completely removed. It goes into the "Trash Bin". You can see this behaviour if you have the Trash Bin open and then delete an FX insert. It will be removed from a track but also appear in PS1 Trash Bin. Just right click on the item in the Trash Bin to fully "Delete" it or "Restore" it.

11. You can simply drag an FX to another slot with another FX on it to replace it.

12. Ctrl + click to return faders to their default positions

13. Click on the plus button (in the Instruments Panel) to add a VSTi and right click on it to Expand ...or see the Outputs for it. They should now appear in the Mixer.

14. You can detach the Mixer in the Console so that it becomes a floating view. To do this simply click on the Detach / Attach button in the Console (...red arrow below)

15. You can also easily switch between Large and Small Mixer views. Just click on the Large / Small button (..blue arrow in the image above) inside the Console.
