Hi everyone. The Studio One FAQ thread is back.

Going forward the Studio One FAQ thread needs to reside here on this new PreSonus Studio One forum. I have revised this new version and made it easier to read. The older thread I started was ok but some parts were a bit text heavy. The format / layout is almost identical but with more posts this time, to make it easier to read and crucially to allow me to extend particular areas in future as time goes on much more easily.

Purpose of the Studio One Answers FAQ thread.
Quite a few questions keep popping up and it would really be helpful to new forum members, existing forum members, guests, potential customers, and existing customers, if a collection (not everything of course) of basic information about Studio One could be found quickly, but also on one page ideally.

Where possible I have added video links e.t.c to further aid anyone looking for answers about Studio One.

Yes there is plenty of info available but you have to...

a. Search the forum (can be very time consuming and may involve reading many loosely related thread's).

b. Search the Presonus website which of course has info on other products apart from Studio One.

c. Read the Studio One manual first (I know we all should but we do not all do that, it also does not cover every single question).

d. Do all of the above...

I certainly do not want or expect this to substitute the info for Studio One available elsewhere but rather to make it more easily accessible to all. There are many things that can be changed e.t.c so I am open to ideas and will be trying to add relevant thread links with lots of answers ideally to certain questions asked here on this forum. But the key thing and reasoning behind this is to get people started with the basics and where to find Studio One related answers as quickly as possible.

I do ask Presonus and forum members to please correct any links or statements that are not correct thanks, its still work in progress.

Credits: PreSonus Staff and various forum members.

PART 5

x86 vs x64?

Should I install the x86 or x64 version?
This should be taken as a guide only, please do think carefully and add your own research to the information here before making your choice.

You should seriously consider installing the x64 version of Studio One1 if...

1. You are already using an x64 OS

2. You have all the relevant x64 drivers you need for your hardware (sound card in particular) already officially available (out of beta).

3. If you have more than 4gb of ram, you will be able to access all of it if you are running an x64 OS. You probably should install the x64 version of Studio One. 4GB of RAM would be a bare minimum for an x64 OS. 6 - 8GB of RAM or more would be better still.

4. You use large sample Libraries of use plugins that use a large amount of ram Kontakt or Spectrasonics plugs e.t.c. These plugins really do benefit from having more ram available to them but of course they are still perfectly functional with less ram available to them on an x86 OS.

5. You do not want to run two versions of Studio One (x86 and x64) on the same x64 OS. They will happily co - exist but the x86 version will not utilise all the ram it can access like the x64 version will. Also any x86 software will run on a WoW64 layer. Which may add a small performance penalty.

You might want to avoid installing the x64 version of Studio One if...

1. You do not have more than 4GB of ram or even less ram. You would still be able to run an x64 OS and run the x64 version of Studio One on it but with 4GB or less it may be better to use an x86 OS and the x86 version of Studio One

2. You have a large collection of x86 plugins and do not want to use bridging or similar solutions to get them to work in Studio One x64. The best option would be to run the x86 version of Studio One on an x64 OS alongside the x64 version.

3. You have no real need or see no real benefit in using Studio One with x64 plugs in general.

Will my x86 plugins work in the x64 version of Studio One?
Studio One Pro x64 does not currently host x86 plugins You could try using the popular Jbridge. It is not officially supported though.

Any plugins with x64 versions?
NI, Spectrasonics, Voxengo, PSP e.t.c already have x64 versions of there plugins to name a few, more will be continually added as time goes on. Check your chosen plug ins website to see what versions are currently available.

Are there any videos you can suggest on the subject please?
Yes have a look at this thread which has a two part video series of very helpful tutorials on the subject produced by Motoko

What kind of Licensing is used here?
Each Studio One Pro license entitles you to 5 activations on a MAC or PC Laptop or similar. You can install Studio one on as many systems as you like but...can only run one instance of it at any given time.
If you want to run PS1 simultaneously on two or more systems you will need to purchase another license.

Can I transfer Studio One?
Yes you can...

If you have Studio one installed go to Presonus > Studio one > License > EULA

"You may permanently transfer your
license to use the software to another party who will be bound by this
agreement, provided you do not retain any copies of the software."

So what is the transfer process?
Click on this link, fill in the PDF form and send it to the email address suggested within the PDF form. PreSonus will then start and complete the transfer for you.

PART 10

PROBLEM SOLVING

I am having some problems getting Melodyne to work with Studio One v2 what should I do?
You can find a a very detailed solution here.

There is so much new content to install but V1 content is also listed along side v2 content, so what should I install?
Please have a look at this thread which will guide you through this process.

Heavy load when playback is stopped or during silence but CPU load goes away when playback started again, or sound is processed.
This is a problem with denormals. Very small numbers cause cause the processor to change into a different processing mode, which is much much more expensive. This can be prevented in a number of ways and it should not happen with our own plugins. But unlike other hosts we try not to do anything redundant (or sound changing) with the audio between plugins, so if one plugin produces denormals and another has problems with those and those two are chained, this problem occurs. We really consider this a problem of those offending plugins. You can debug or prevent this before/after suspicious plugins using something like this, (or you could just add a mixtool and e.g. flip both phases or do a very small gain-change, i.e. do almost nothing)

CPU and Memory Test Project
Here is a thread started by Motoko that can help diagnose performance issues when running Studio One. It includes a test project you can download. Please feel free to add your own results to the thread.

Why am I having drop outs in Studio One?
If you are experiencing drop outs and cannot use low latency settings its very likely you have hardware problems. If you use a FireWire interface often these problems relate to the FireWire chip you are currently using. On PC's this needs to be a TI-Chipset. You can find more information about that with a FireWire checker.

Capability and Performance tips
Monolithent has started a thread with useful information on compatibility and performance. You can find it here

Problems with S1 Soundset installation

When trying to install the soundsets and addons, StudioOne seems to be asking for the CD...
First make sure that you have downloaded the addons that you wish to install. The easiest way to install the addons is to simply open StudioOne, and then drag and drop the addon files onto the start page. If you do ever see the DVD install screen, simply close that window and follow the drag and drop procedure. If they don't show up after installing them this way, then the download was more than likely corrupted- check them with the MD5 instructions here

I cannot install the Studio One sound sets can you help?
Try copying the soundsets directly into the default soundset path (where all the other PreSonus Soundsets are). Refresh the S1 browser or restart S1.

PART 11

PROBLEM SOLVING [Continued...]

DPC latency utility
You should also run the DPC Latency Checker. If you get peaks there, you have a journey before you, but at least you're a step further. (could be anything in your hardware or drivers, even the odd virus-checker).
Recently processor performance saving has been one of the stronger contributors to this area of problems. aka speed step. Here you see examples of dpc latencies with and without cpu-saving enabled (C1E and CPU EIST).

Optimising ASIO performance
What you should do for your performance anyway if you are running windows with an ASIO soundcard is (in System Properties-> Advanced-> Settings> Performance Options-> Advanced) "Adjust processor scheduling for best performance of: > "Background services" (ASIO is a Background service and the source for your DAWs timing).

Note: It has been reported that changing this setting from Programs can have a reverse effect on ASIO performance in Windows 7. Make the change advised to "Background services" and then check your performance. It definitely should not be worse. If it is, you can always change it back.

PART 12

PROBLEM SOLVNG [Continued...]

Audio

For some reason I cannot get any sound from PS1 please help?

a. Interference from other media apps: Are you streaming any video or audio from the internet while PS1 is running? This might be blocking access to the audio Card for PS1. Exit any video or audio playback elsewhere. Close then restart PS1.

b. Track Mute / Solo: Obvious but might be overlooked... is there another track in your song that is solo enabled? This will mute other tracks.
Why am I getting crackling sounds, cpu spikes, dropouts e.t.c during playback?

c. Virus Scanners, Firewalls and network activity: Are you running any other software applications in the background? Open Windows task Manager Ctrl + Alt + Delete and check the Processor tab. If you are running any Anti Virus software it's probably a good idea to switch it off as Virus Scanners can cause problems for DAWs. Of course if you are not using a Virus Scanner (you will very unlikely be connected to the internet) you might want to disable your Firewall as well.

d. Drivers for your soundcard: It's always best to double check that you are running the very latest drivers for your sound card. Presonus driver can be found here.Simply go to your manufacturers website and look for drivers there. It should be easy to find the latest drivers perhaps within a Support link on the site.

e. Drivers for your video card: Out of date Graphics card drivers can cause problems with any DAW. It's always a good to check if you have the very latest graphics card drivers.

MIDI

No sound from a midi track here. What am I doing wrong?

a. Do you have VSTi loaded?
You can do this by dragging your VSTi of choice directly from the Browser and dropping it on an a track in the arrangement. PS1 will also create a track for you when dragging a VSTi if you drag the item under the last available track.

b. Have you added a device yet?
Click on the small arrow in the second parameter box in the Arrange view. Select "Add a device".

You have these options.
1. You can choose one of the preset templates if your device is listed or you can
2.. Choose "New Keyboard" if you want to set up a Generic Midi keyboard template.
3. Choose " New Instrument" if you want to play external MIDI instruments and record controller movements.
4. Choose "New Control Surface" to get a Generic MIDI control surface Template

c. Is your VSTi track selected? Make sure you have selected the track your VSTi is on first before attempting to trigger the sounds from it.

d. Is your VSTi visible on a track in the Arrangement? If not you will not hear any input from your keyboard to your VSTi
