Just my 2 cents. It is a shame the youth of today have grown up with the rap thug music.
I will take a Beatle song over this garbage I hear today. The melodic pharses are now reduced
to violence and living in the ghetto.
It kinda of reminds me how the world is just falling apart and needs help from us presonus users
to help the world with music like the Beatles did in such a positive way.
Write and produce some positive tunes for once.

LOL! Wow...way to hate on an entire sector of the music industry.
I mean personal preference is one thing, but rap is an art just like any other. No offense intended.
My current pick of the litter for rock is The Black Keys. I hear all kinds of "references" in their music. Hendrix, Zeppelin, Floyd, ZZ top...They might not be the most original band in the world...but what they do they really do well.
An interesting "side journey" for me lately was to listen first to a song by a dude that goes by "Gotye" called Somebody I Used to Know

My only problem with most of the commercial rap is all the profanity, cop killing and smacking your bitch up.....lol.
It's not necessary. Yeah, it's a matter of taste but I have turned down a few pretty high paying projects where the lyrics were about shooting people and raping your wife.
Why? Some may call it creative and freedom or freedom of speech. I call it all garbage.
Now don't get me wrong, there is some Rap out there that is awesome and I've had the pleasure of mixing some good stuff in that genera so yeah, Woodbeast's comments are a bit over the top for sure but I see a bit of his angle.
But the raping an pillaging is not confined to Rap anymore. You can't listen to the radio now-a-days without every other word being bleeped - Rap, Rock, Metal or otherwise.
Sadly, I won't let my kids listen to any commercial Pop radio and surely won't let them watch and music video channels.
on my heavy rotation at the moment:
1. iamx (one of the guys from the sneaker pimps...some really cool electronical-type stuff going on there, especially "mercy" or i" for an i")
2. moody blues - to our children's childrens' children. dunno, this came out in '69, and sounds sooo far beyond abbey road or pretty much anything the beatles did (and i say that as a rabid beatles fan...after '67 -MMT- they pretty much quit the pioneering). mike pinder was a mellotron FREAK. amazing stuff.
3. deftones - either white pony or diamond eyes. dunno what it is about these guys, i just really really like them.
lots of other stuff, but they're the 3 biggies atm.

Some people are like slinkies. They don't have a purpose, but they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

For me it's The Moody Blues anthology, Yes all their albums and all night classical music on PBS. I try to listen to any and all every night to improve and add to my musical motif.I used to listen to Rock, Country, Bluegrass,Latin, Jazz, New Age Ambient and just about any blues from Chicago to New Orleans but I found to many similarities in the music that I was creating myself. Now that I've narrowed it down some I find that I'm able to be more happier with my arrangement's.

A lot of System 7 (Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy from Gong's techno project).
The Big Pink's latest album 'Future This'
Quite a bit of Underworld.
... as far as genres go, my feeling is that there's always something great in every single genre... but you generally have to hunt for the good stuff (most of what you hear on the radio is in the 95% that is either shite, meh, or just uninspiring).

The Beastie Boys
The Black Keys
Bjork
The Gorillaz
Portishead
Soulwax
Patrick Watson
DJ Hi-Tek (Talib Kweli / MOOD)
Citizen Cope
And a lot more that I can't thing of now.
Edit: Sorry didn't see the top 3 part:
The Gorillaz
Bjork
The Black Keys
Right now, the most inspiring music for me.

I spun up Prince's Controversy, 1999 and Sign O' the Times the other day. A trio of extremely well made albums.
Other than that, it's:
Bjork's Greatest Hits
Roger Water's Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking
Jill Scott - Live CD
and Foo Fighters "All My Life" has been getting repeated spins as of late.

That's sooo '90's Cops havent been killed and bitches haven't been smacked up in over a decade. It's all about the party now - drugs, alcohol, sex and the club (the basic tenants of classic Rock n Roll for ages), and I hear it's reach more in white mainstream pop more than anything. Today's commercial hip hop isn't my thing, but The Roots still hold up the mantel of what true Hip Hop should be.

Giz,
I am NOT a hater; I apologize if I offended anyone. My point was to voice my opinion on the music out today and what I like to listen to and not listen to.
Popping a cap in someone’s ass and smacking my Babies momma up is just not a good thing, but of course if people like it that is cool for them.
Let us just get along
