This script is for those of us who wish to run the mini with the 1602 without needing an external router. The password MUST BE 13 characters (5 ASCII or 10 hex).

This code works in Snow Leopard for sure. Lion script is coming once AJ and I get it figured out.

APPLICATIONS >> UTILITIES >> APPLESCRIPT EDITOR >> (paste this code)

(SAVE AS "APPLICATION" IN APPLESCRIPT EDITOR)

SYSTEM PREFS >> ACCOUNTS >> LOGIN ITEMS >> (+) >> (Your AdHoc Script) >> (Checkmark it)

Voila!

Here is the script walkthrough.

Jake, love the script you put together. Now will this still be able to work on the new Mountain Lion OSX? Thanks.

The only reason it needed a re-write for Lion is because Apple changed the position and layout of the Wireless Internet menu between (Snow) Leopard and Lion. If they don't change it again with Mountain Lion, the script won't need updating. So it's a case of waiting to see, I'm afraid.

There's no computery black magic going on here, it's just an AppleScript. It's a way of automating things like mouse clicks and keystrokes that normally the user would make themselves. It's useful here because we're talking about a scenario where the Mac has no keyboard, mouse or display attached, and we just need it to do a few things on booting up, then sit and do basically nothing, as far as input from the user goes.

Thanks AJ. Much better explanation than I could have done.

Also... (Walker) The script AJ and I formulated is only a workaround on the Mac Mini, due to the fact that they have not yet created an update that would allow the Mini to default to the AdHoc on boot. Perhaps they will include that option in the future (which would void the need for our workaround)... but I wouldn't hold my breath.

As soon as someone knows if the script works on Mountain Lion, please post a response here.

Hey jake. Great stuff going on here, I must admit though that I've been having some problems connecting my iPad and mini. The script works great, but no matter what program I'm using, the connection just won't happen. With desktop connect, my iPad can't even see the mini even when they're both on the adhoc network and with Air Display, my mini cant find my iPad. I'm at a loss. Tech support wasn't much help. Any light you could possibly shed? Thanks.

Brandon.

Sorry you're having problems. Firstly, I'm already assuming that all updates are current. Correct? They just came out with SL Remote 1.3 which also requires a FW update. So I know it sounds dumb, but please make sure everything's up to date.

Here's a little checklist that may help trace down the problem. Try doing these things in order.

1) Make sure everything's powered down and the iPad is cleared of all open apps
2) Connect your Firewire to the mini and 1602
3) Disconnect any monitor/audio from the mini
4) Power-on the mini
5) On iPad, go to Settings>Wi-Fi>(your mini's Ad-Hoc name)
6) Open Desktop Connect App in iPad. (It should give you the screen that shows the blank blue screens and the 2 tabs labeled "Settings" and "Connect")... If it shows this screen, hit "Connect".
7) Power-up your 1602
8) Once you see the mini's desktop on the iPad and verify that the UL is open and connected to the 1602, open the SR Remote App
9) Connect to your 1602 via the "Devices Online" in the SR Remote App.

Voila?

If there is still a problem, please let me know which step above failed.

Hello! This seems to be exactly what I want to do!

Use my mac mini without hefting around a monitor, and only use an ipad as the primary/only monitor. Is that rundown correct?

I don't own any presonus gear myself (sorry - they seem to have some great stuff) and only plan on using my computer (thru ableton live) as an 'fx box' for my live (street ready) guitar rig. I searched and did not find solutions that seemed to work (the smallest monitors that would work would require more power; plus $), and no one seemed to have figured out a workaround using software. But my baby boomer mother offered an ipad for christmas, and so finding this thread with the possible solution may prove wonders for me.

Sorry just a brief interjection from me - but is what I stated above the true deal? or does one need to have the presonus gear in the mix for the mini to display thru the ipad? (doesn't seem like it should, just had to grill the details from you)

Thanks in advance for any info you can illuminate my way.

Heya Jake,

It seems clear that it will work as I see you have demonstrated, but can you verify with me here that you have provided a script that allows one to solely monitor a mac mini with only an ipad? no other hardware (i.e. primary monitor) necessary?

Thanks for your work and energy with helping us out.

David:

Sorry for the long delay in a reply. Yes. Once you set this up at home with an actual monitor, use the above script (early in the thread).
Be sure to "test" it out at home on the real monitor FIRST... A couple times. (Power down and restart).

I don't know what Remote Desktop Application you're using, so again, try it at home first to work out all the bugs.

Once I fire mine up, I look in "Network" on my iPad and verify that the mac mini has indeed defaulted to the ad-hoc network. If, for some reason, it doesn't, I simply recycle the mini.

Once I see the mini's ad-hoc works from my ipad, THEN I open my RDC... Bam.

Jake:

So I finally got my hands on an ipad to test this out, and it hasn't worked yet.

I am running osx 10.7.4 (lion) and installed 'desktop connect' as the remote desktop app on the ipad.

I copied and pasted the lion apple script code as stated above (editing the network name and password [5 characters - right?]) and made it 'run only' and also open upon startup (but I did not click 'hide' upon startup in system prefs). But when the computer is restarted the apple script is on in the dock, and when clicked a box opens stating that 'network access to the computer is not permitted'. I checked out my sharing preferences in system pref and indeed found that my screen sharing access to the computer was not allowed so I clicked that it would be allowed. But still upon restart the same box telling me access is not permitted comes up. I am guessing there is still more to do on the mini side to allow the ipad to access it - but what?

When you check on the settings on the ipad there is no mention of the mini coming up. but my friends windows laptop came up and he was quite pleased with that!

Thanks for your earlier reply. I'll let you know if I get it, but any help you can offer would be nice.
