Recording the FX without sending to a sub group and then recording the subgroup

Is it possible? Talking about a 16.4.2

i know one way is to send the FX to a sub group (or even an AUX) and then use the VSL setup to route the sub group/aux to channels 17-32, but i dont want to take up a sub just for that.

any advice is appreciated.

Yes, you can.

In Capture you can record one FX straight to tracks 17/18. In VSL under setup you can choose what you want to send to tracks 17/18.

In S1 (or any other ASIO savvy DAW) you can record both FXes per the same VSL setup menu (The SL sends 32 channels in total to your DAW, all recordable).
