Yo forumites!

A while back we did a few Group Mix threads in which the folks participating took a shot at mixing a song with the intent of seeing how different mixers approached the same track. It was a great way to see different techniques and different methods for addressing various types of common mixing "problems".

So ... forum-willing I'd like to kick off the third official Group Mix ... with a twist!

Themuzic and I have been discussing some other ideas for topics to discuss during a live streaming event. In the same spirit of community development for the AWESOME folks here at the forums I will be conducting a live broadcast at which we'll discuss mix techniques and ideas for this "Group Mix #3". Anyone who participates and does a mix is encouraged to show up and discuss their own techniques as well in the live chat. It should serve as a great open forum for folks to discuss their ideas and thoughts about a given track. And we can discuss WHATEVER we want to about the project from setup, to editing, to mixing and whatever else crosses our collective minds.

To keep things simple I've selected two tracks to choose from. These tracks are picked from the large selection of practice tracks available at Mike Senior's (editor and columnist at Sound on Sound) companion page to his excellent book "Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio". The multitrack library is here: http://www.cambridge-mt.com/ms-mtk.htm

The Tracks:

1) The first is a rock track titled "Come Around" by Leaf which you can download here:

"Come Around" by Leaf

There is a preview mix here: Preview Mix

2) The second is a hip-hop track titled "Sing With Me" by Side Effects which you can download here (explicit lyrics on this one):

"Sing With Me" by Side Effects

There is a preview mix here: Preview Mix

The Rules:

Simple! Pick whichever one you'd like to work on and submit a mix to this thread (Soundcloud is a great platform for this).

I'm scheduling a live broadcast for Sunday two weeks from now (March 11th) at 6 pm and will be monitoring this thread until then. Any submitted mixes I will collate at the bottom of this post for discussion and reference.

*EDIT: Added forum member's mixes for quick reference.*

Cue Twilight Zone theme. Either that or the Psycho music because obviously I'm stalking you outside your window...

Cool though...you know what they say and all...great minds...they uh...well I forget how the saying goes...but they're great aren't they?

I don't suppose you'd like to be an expert guest during the broadcast so's you might let us in on your experty mixingness?

It looks like you're making a series, so I can pick a different rock mix to use for this thing. I don't want to step on your work.

I dunno about the "expert mixiness" and all that. I just do what I do and try hard not to screw up.

Isn't that like the recording engineer's motto or something?

Thanks Johnny. I may extend this series (keep mixing the track) and finish it, add some segments on track and FX automation and a bit more overall fine tuning of the rough mix and FX.

I just wasn't in the mood for 3 hours of explaining things on video, but this was good practice doing that.

Those are exactly the kinds of things I'd like to talk about during the live session. It will be interesting to see the differences between how people approach the mix.

Here ya go Gizmo... I took this as far as I can. Good practice for pop/rock but really not my thing at all.

I was gonna finish the video series with the rest of it but I don't have the patience.

This is a great idea.

I had a thought....for those of us with less experience, this would be a great chance to contribute and receive constructive criticism and advice. I would not want to hijack this thread to that end, but just a thought for perhaps a future thread.

That's pretty much exactly what I was planning on doing if you read the first post. Granted I'll have my mix done ahead of time, but I'll be walking through my approach, taking comments, questions and offerings from the crowd.

Since there's two mixes it might be a good opportunity to do a dual broadcast though. Something to think about.

Oh sorry man, I didn't catch that part. Carry on then. I have so many client mixes now anyway that works then.
