Didn't you say you have access to the NT-1000?
That's one of the next mics on my shopping list. Why aren't you using that?

Wasn't crazy about the tone.

Unfortunately the only store that has any mics other than pure crapola around me is Guitar Center. Well I could go to American Music in Bellevue as well, but that's a helluva drive. I'll be getting the Sennheiser SM4 around the 25th, and I have a 30 day no hassle return if I don't like it. I'll have something ready to record by then, too.

I like the way I sound off axis on my beta58a, too, but the thing is a little too noisy for recording. It's fine live, and for day to day use, but I wouldn't record with it.

Look at Se X1 cardioid side address, and R0de M2 hypercardioid end address. Both phantom powered condensers, slightly different sounds. Both very good, both under $180. Both have very flat wide frequency response range.

We compared Behringer B2, B5, SE X1, Rode M2, and Cad 195. B2 and B5 were flat, but not as detailed as the X1 and the M2.

Update on the Sennheiser MK4 LDC. Wow! Very transparent mic especially for the price. I sound like myself -- third party verification on this because I can't tell. I like it better than other mics in the same range (AKG C214 for example). It does need its own shock mount since a universal won't fit -- $299 for the mic, $99 for the shock mount.

One other thing -- it's quiet, detailed, and has a nice but not hyped presence (common in low priced LDCs).

Negatives: no PAD switch. no HPF switch. You'll need a mic preamp for this mic.
Positives: other than above -- it fits very well the the Presonus Studio Channel that I use for my preamp.

Made right next door to Neumann.

I picked up a pair of Avantone CK-1 Small condenser mics. They have 3 capsules and a 10 db pad and a 80hz rolloff switch on each mike . So you get 3 polar patterns and 3 settings. It's like having 9 mics for the price of one. Very happy and compare to Neuman KM187s in the specs for about $149 each. Check them out here: http://www.avantonepro.com/Avantone-CK-1-Small-Capsule-FET-Pencil-Microphone.html

Nice mics!!

I wouldn't recommend Blue mics for people that have really deep voices, since they tend to have a exagerated proximity effect and that is one of the thing that contributes for Blue's caracteristic "larger than life" sound. Some people say they sound unnatural.

I actually like having a wide variety of mics due to different types of vocal recording but for my i have only been using the pg42 by sure it cost around 200-250. I paid $250.00.. Two lines of microphones you may want to check out are

ADK http://www.adkmic.com/catalog/audiophileseries/

and

Advanced Audio http://advancedaudio.ca/collections/fet-microphones

Both companies offer microphones that perform above their price level.

Lots to choose from and as others have said - although difficult - best to try before you buy since microphonse are so personal to one's voice

Sorry not following your pricing guideline..
I love the Rode NT2000.
(OK it is around US$600)

But
Its "infinitely" variable Polar Patterns, "infinitely" variable Hi Pass, and :"infinitely" variable Pad etc make it a very very versatile Mic. And, like so many Rode Mics, it is a sturdy model that will take a beating.

I've got the shure pg27, love it combined with a sm57 on guitar cabs. I never liked it on vocals, although it's cardioid it seems to pickup alot more room than my other cardioid mics. Got the rode m3 a few months ago and that was nice on acustic guitar but really super on hihats. My first choise on vocals is a sennheiser mk4

EDIT: This is a great thread by the way....nice to see what people use and where anyone up for a preamp thread?
