I'm having the same problem. Since Mavericks I can't connect my iPad Mini (SL Remote) to Universal Control on my Macbook Pro. I will try to use an external router as recommended.
I'm getting a new MacBook that has mavericks. Can I just download universal control 1.7.1 for Mac. ? To get everything to work. My old mac had Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I had to load another U.C . Download before I could upgrade to 1.7.. Please inform me of any major problems before I drop the money on a new mac. I also found I need to use a adapter to use FireWire 400.
I've been having similar sorts of connection issues since updating to Mavericks and iOS 7. I used to be able to connect up 2-3 iPads, and 3-4 iPhones simultaneously with no issues until Mavericks and iOS 7. I use a dedicated router with my 16.4.2 for my setup, and I still have issues with random disconnects. I'll certainly check on the AppNap issue and report back.
I have confirmed that turning off AppNap indeed works for me. QMix and SL Remote don't have problems staying connected anymore.
Here's my setup:
StudioLive 16.4.2 - connected to laptop via Firewire
Wifi router - connected to laptop via ethernet
Macbook Pro 13" - Mavericks
3 iPhones - iOS 7.x - Latest QMix (non Ai)
4 iPads - iOS 7.x - Latest SL Remote (non Ai)
In addition to Universal Control, I run my backing tracks with QLab into Soundflower and map QLab outputs to Firewire inputs for my SL 16.4.2. I turned off AppNap for all the apps I use for my shows: QLab, Soundflower and Universal Control. All is stable after this.
Ad-hoc connections broke with Mavricks and no longer works with SL Remote or QMix. I ran into this when troubleshooting another problem with SL Remote and QMix not connecting through a router. IPad and IPhone would see the StudioLive mixers but pressing Connect would not do anything. Anyone suffering this problem should look at disabling any firewall on the Mac. That resolved the connection problem for me. See the SL Remote Troubleshooting guide for additional information. There is a TCP-IP port that the McAfee firewall was blocking in my case.
