Wow. Well maybe I'll just start with two 153's and get another guitar...lol

I forgot to add, I did not run the KW153's in DEEP mode. You may be ok with just the KW153's for now. Those things are huge. I think they weigh 87 pounds each.

Most any potent top will run away from a single sub, there are exceptions but bass takes FAR more power then mid highs... If you think about it, the sub has 1000 watts peak power, and the tops have 1000 watts peak power. if you see my original, my 2 subs with over 6000 watts + a KW181 with 2 153's over..

Granted the subs I brought were more powerful than the 181's but this just exemplifies that one KW 181 will not keep up with 2 -153's...BUT you CAN turn the 153's down and deal with whatever you have in that frame of reference..

one thing i noticed with the whole "ratio of subs to tops" with the kw series - i keep my 153s with the level at noon (straight up and down), but to get a good balance with the subs, i keep those up around 3 o'clock.

for a real great sound - 4 subs under 2 tops. still with the levels at 3 o'clock and noon, respectively

I recently mixed on 153/dual181 per side. Liked the tops a lot; not sure about the subs - but they weren't in Deep mode. Dunno how loud the rig will go. Dual tops would be only for wider coverage, not more volume. I don't know if they "play nice" as splayed pairs.

I read the documentation and manual on the QSCs. I believe that to properly use 2 KW153s per side you have to have a gap between them to avoid comb filtering. Their 75 degree dispersion goes into the sound field of the other one if you butt them together. They had a neat picture and everything...lol

Any way to rent a second sub, until you can afford to buy it? Or even finance?

Back in 03 when I bought my original rig, I went with Yorkville Unity15's over LS800p's along with a PowerMax16 mixer, mics stands, cables etc. I wasn't able to pay for it all, but I knew the difference the subs made, so I financed the subs over a year, and then I would rent monitors and a snake. Once I had paid off the subs, it became obvious that renting the snake & monitors was more pain than it was worth. So at that point I ended up buying them outright.

But yeah, if you can rent or finance the second sub, you'll never regret it.

mwright137 wrote:Long story short: Will 2 QSC KW153 and 1 QSC KW181 get me by until I can pick up a second 181?

The bands I was previously in had their own PA so I had to work with what we had. Now it's time to buy my own. I really like the QSC stuff and want 2 153's and 2 181's for the mains and maybe another pair of 181's in the future for outdoor gigs. That's the plan. Right now I only have $4000 to work with, so I'm contemplating getting the 2 153's and 1 181 for now and add the additional subs as I get more to spend.

Any thoughts? I actually considered going with the K122 and KSUB setup but I'm not sure that would work. The main band I will use this for is a classic rock cover band playing in local bars. Drums, bass, keys, 2 guitars, harmonica, maybe 5 vocals.

I would stick with the 153s and 181 until you can add a second. The KSubs sound less than stellar compared to the 181s. Run the 181 from an aux send and you will be fine.

I'm leaning more toward a guitar and some accessories instead of a single 181 and then look into subs later. I'm gonna look into that LABSUB thingy...

Edit: Considering my lack of woodworking skills, maybe labsubs are a bad idea for me...lol

Hi I have built MANY LABsubs and they are BEASTS.. BIG and HEAVY and sound AWESOME. You can (if these drawbacks don't worry you) have a cabinet shop that has CNC router capability) cut out all the pieces for you then all you need to do is assemble... and that's a good idea anyway...because they are a real BITCH to cut out!!!

However, I do have a small, portable, DIY sub design that really, pound for pound kicks ass! and will do everything the KW181 will do sound wise. It's easy to build and with the Paudio driver you can build a pair for just about $500. These you can build with a skill saw if necessary...Build 4 and get something like the Peavey IPR7500 ( 7 Lbs!!) and you'll have PLENTY of low end and a small portable package.for about $1700...

Here is a link:
http://www.fane-acoustics.com/resources.aspx
There is a 125 liter (15") and 200 liter (18") version, with little or no difference in performance using the FANE colossus drivers...
Our own JerryD built 4 on my recommendation and he was more than pleased with their performance. In all I have assisted a dozen or so folks the world over and never had anyone that didn't think they were the BOMB!

To answer Timmy's question they array quite nicely, and do require a slight splay to the front of the cabs @ 2 per side. on top of the subs like I did you don't want them touching anyway as they will rattle if they come together..
