I had a thought....for those of us with less experience, this would be a great chance to contribute and receive constructive criticism and advice. I would not want to hijack this thread to that end, but just a thought for perhaps a future thread.

Yes...absolutely.

I WANT you to contribute. The files are linked in the original post so you can download the entire multitrack project, do your mix, host it online (Soundcloud is an obvious choice because of it's integration with S1, but Dropbox, Box.net and others work also). Post it in this thread and I will collect them all in the first post so everyone can hear how we each approached the mix...

Then show up at the live broadcast. I'll talk about my mix, others can input as much as they want, ask questions, comment etc.

A group opportunity to see what kinds of ideas we have about two tracks that are common to us all.

I should take one of these songs and do a mix on Livestream, no?

That's pretty much exactly what I was planning on doing if you read the first post. Granted I'll have my mix done ahead of time, but I'll be walking through my approach, taking comments, questions and offerings from the crowd.

Since there's two mixes it might be a good opportunity to do a dual broadcast though. Something to think about.

Oh sorry man, I didn't catch that part. Carry on then. I have so many client mixes now anyway that works then.

By all means though, please do a mix if you have the time. I would be shocked if folks didn't want your input on the tracks. And if you want to dual broadcast then we can set that up pretty easily on Livestream.

Just had a question, can we add or take tracks away, (not tearing it apart making something completely different, just subtle changes) or is this just limited to trying to get the best sound out of the mix as is?

Thanks.

For the purposes of this exercise I'd say to approach the mix as though the band or artist had contracted you to "make these tracks we recorded sound as good as possible". If, however, as the mix engineer you make the decision that some of the tracks are either unnecessary or cause a problem that can't be addressed effectively without compromising the song then those are decisions for you to make. Of course, real world you would likely approach the artist(s) and let them know what your intentions are with the offending tracks.

I say go for it, but I wouldn't make any changes that significantly affect the "whole" of the song, after all...it isn't YOUR art, you're just trying to help them make it the best art it can be

Gotcha, I just have an itch to add some "accents." I'll probably do what I am thinking and let you be the judge as to whether it is acceptable or not.

Thanks for the reply!

Ha, I won't judge anything, I'll just tell you whether I like it. Which is completely subjective. It will be interesting to see what your ideas are. That's the whole point!

Hello!

I have completed my version of "Come Around," so feel free to pick it apart as I would like feedback. I know I could have made the mix a little louder, but the limiter in S1 just wasn't cutting it. Also, I am working in a fairly untreated room aside from some foam for the flutters. I was going to upload to Soundcloud, but for some reason it isn't showing up in the "services" as an option, so ya. The file is mp3 @ 320 Kbs. If someone can let me know how to post a song file so you can play it from the forum without having to download it that would be helpful (or just get Soundcloud working)!

Sound: I intentionally went for a more "dirty, grungy" kind of sound as I thought it fit the song. I also added some "accents" as this is what I heard in my head upon hearing the raw files.

Hope you enjoy!

Do you have a Soundcloud account? Once your account is set up you should be able to look under the files tab in the S1 browser expand the "servers" entry and see the Soundcloud client (if you don't, check in the "Studio One" menu in the toolbar and click on Studio One Extensions and make sure the Soundcloud extension is installed, and enabled). Then just double click the Soundcloud client in the servers section under the files tab and log into your account with your username and password. Once that's done you can use the client to upload files.

You can embed a Soundcloud file in a post by going to your Soundcloud track in your web browser, clicking the "share" icon on the top left of the player on that track, grabbing the "embed code" (make sure you uncheck the use HTML 5 code button) and then pasting it into flash tags in your post like this:

That will insert the player directly into the post.

Hope that helps!

My mix won't be very hard to top. It needs a mastering touch.

Thank you Gizz, I have class in a few, but I will look into it when I get home.

Anyone who heard the mix care to comment? I'd appreciate it.

Sounds good but there 2 things I hear.

1. The drums have this constant "Flam" type effect, like to you used either a Delay or chorus or something
2. The drums overall have no presence in the mix. Kind of papery and thing, maybe caused by effect you used.

Sound cloud test.

The Muzic, thanks for the reply, I will try to work on that. Sounds pretty awesome on my monitors, but my room sucks for critical listening.

Worked! Thank you Gizz!!
