Hey folks,

Just a thought since by and large the majority of the forums here are mostly technical in nature. I wondered if there was a desire or an interest in having a dedicated "music theory" forum here. It seems that there is a pretty good number of artists here, but even mixing and mastering folks need a good handle on theory. Just a thought...

That would be great, but only if there's a couple of people that can take point and post some useful stuff to start off with. Like some short tutorials or statements.

Maybe we can set up a couple of posts on the regular sections to see how the are being responded to and when the discussions are growing, move them to a specific forum.

I know I can use some good tips on Music Theory...

Pfffhhbbttt *spits out mouthful of coke*

Did somebody say they wanted somone to take point on a music theory forum? Make a few posts? Provide some discussions? Well I mean...if that's something you're interested in, I'd be happy to start some discussions.

It doesn't necessarily need to be "music theory" but could certainly be something like "musicianship" or a braoder category that would allow for discussion on other topics like arrangement, theory, writing, and stylistic techniques.

I'll write up a few discussion topics and see what happens

Cheers!

Rob Lee and I got together and started spawning some ideas... And yes, that resulted in two initiatives. First of all a little sound design thingy called Section9 Sounds (section9sounds.com) and a record label called Section9 Records (section9records.com)... The first one is live, the second one soon will be as well.

But websites are up and running though.

It could be very well be a general "music lifestyle" forum for musicians, where we would solve our questions as musicians (or aspiring to), let it be composing, theory, play techniques, practice stuff or even how to contact a label or get a gig.

My feeling is that when Rap and Hip-hop came out, theory went right out the window.

You'd be surprised. A lot of DJ's actually have their collection somewhat organized and grouped on key

We can also expand the section a bit with questions on how to obtain a particular sound, in terms of effects processing but also in terms of synth programming.

Come on you guys There's actually quite a few very good hip hop artists out there. As well as producers.

- NERD / Neptunes
- Timbaland
- Mos Def
- KRS-One
- The Roots
- OutKast
- Talib Kweli
- Q-Tip
- DJ Shadow
- DJ Krush

Just search for these rappers / producers online and you'll see what I mean. And this has nothing to do with that mass production, autotune loaded R&B/Rap/Pop music that is pooring out these days that I personally, really, really don't like...

I'm more than happy to get some theory going. As long as someone can get some mixing & mastering basics going. Im new to DAWs. Ive always composed music using musical notation (finale, sibelius.)

Well, just to be clear, I'm not talking quality, let alone taste. This is about theoretical musical knowlegde which - on average - is certainly less evolved with certain styles of music. Exception - in both directions - guaranteed, of course ...
