Hot Swapping into the board while it is running is not a good idea. It needs to set it self up before use. I will start the laptop and let it completely setup before connecting the firewire cable. Then I will plug in the firewire cable wait about 5 seconds before opening universal control (the blue button) and click on the picture of the studio live.

in the studio I always have it hooked up, I start the PC last. and it works fine. but I'll try doing what you suggested.

When hooked with laptop. tried to copy settings, scenes etc to laptop, but it was copying very slow, than when finished not all settings were copied. and Blue Presonus Icon was sometimes red, I had to restart.
And it made clicking/popping sound thru SL in the MAINs.

This is normal as it loses connection with the board.

But, when it finished copying, it didn't copy everything, I tried few times. it was very slow. everytime i clicked on "get" the progress bar didn't start from the beginning but continued where the bar left off.. and the icon didn't turn red.
btw, the clicking sound was very quite

This section did not make sense. First you didn't have the laptop connected and was using it without the laptop? Then you were unplugged from the laptop and burned a CD from the unconnected laptop and the SL froze?

Sorry for making it confusing. I had FW conected to laptop when I opened mediaPlayer to rip the cd to laptop.
before this I put laptop to sleep but than woke it up, I think the mixer froze because universal control was initializing.

Depending on how you have the compressors, the gain control could be used as an expander. So, with the gain control up, the sound level increased a thus caused feedback.

yes, I didn't notice the settings for that channel when i was going thru each channel turning on compressors. I had gain up in the compressor to make-up for gain reduction.. I didn't change settings back to normal after i finished fooling around with it in the studio.

It seems to me as if you have a learning curve to do my friend. Could be the hardware...but it sounds to me like it is 90% user error in this case.

I disagree a bit on this, but i might be wrong

sounds like you need a bit of tuning

yes, it gave me this message: "This machine should be able to handle real-time streaming of audio and/or video data without drop-outs."
i guess i need some kind of tuning (just like always with windows when I try to use it with audio in some way..)

just borrowed my buddy's mac-top,
everything worked perfectly, with the same cable,
plus fw400 to fw800 converter and with the old and new universal control and SL new firmware beta drivers!

And did you also try with another firewire cable?

tried to set to legacy, couldn't figure out how to do it.

tried different cable, same thing.

Recently got a 16.4.2 mixer.

First digital mixer I bought. (Analog got boring for me because I think i can mix on them in my sleep)

it Works fine with my custom desktop recording/music PC even at 64 sample latencies sometimes.

But, with my Toshiba L305 Laptop doesn't get along very well.
Today I had to be at 2 united youth church choirs rehearsal to do sound. together 120+ singers. I took 16.4.2 and laptop with me to test SL more and to record choirs rehearsing.
That Church has analog 32ch Soundracft mixer with almost all channels full, and bunch of outs: Main, Monitors, Halls, record out etc..

I swapped some of the ins from their board into my SL:
8 choir mics, piano (piezo pickup= terrible sound), stereo cd/md playback, handheld mics. etc
Main out (than it goes to DSP and separates to more outs), 4 monitor outs feeding 6 speakers (4 wedges, 2 monitors aove for choir).
Basically copied the settings (and eq'ed piano heavily to compensate for the bad pick up sound).
Eveything was Ok when wasn't plugged in to my laptop.

When hooked with laptop. tried to copy settings, scenes etc to laptop, but it was copying very slow, than when finished not all settings were copied. and Blue Presonus Icon was sometimes red, I had to restart.
And it made clicking/popping sound thru SL in the MAINs.
Than I tried to record in Capture. which was complete failure. odd channels seemed to be receiving inputs but not recording and even channels' meters were fluctuating slowly up and down and that is what those channels recorded: slow waveforms..
Than I sorta abandoned the laptop but didn't unplug the FW cable.
Than I had to Rip a cd into the laptop, good thing i did it at the moment when the choir directors were talking to the choir and there wasn't any rehearsing because when i opened Windows Media Player StudioLive Froze! all meters were stuck/frozen, faders, knobs and buttons not responding, good thing there wasn't any horrible sound coming out. than after about a minute it unfroze, and than I turned off the laptop.

I use Lindy PCMIA FW adapter with TI chipset, it seemed to have been working with hardware i had before, but not with SL..

another embarrassing moment I had: one channel that i fed choir mic into, i had compressor settings really exterme, and when i was going thru each channel while choir was rehearsing, i din't look at the fat chnnel settings too well and truned on the compressor and very loud sound came out of the speakers with some feedback that scared the whole Choir.

I decided to get 16.4.2,
I gonna have monitors hooked up to subgroups, and switch between them by muting groups and maybe have 3rd set of monitors go from Control Room out.

Also, it's possible to have let's say 4 channels coming out from PC thru FW to StudioLive to channels 13-16 and at the same have about 8 channels go to PC from StudioLive right?

I currently use Firestudio with Remote in the studio. I have 2 sets of monitors (might add 3rd).
and i use A&H MixWizard 16ch for live events.

I wanna buy StudioLive 16.0.2 so that I can kill 2 birds with one stone (use it live and in the studio). And of course I realy like StudioLive mixers because they're digital !!

What will I loose if i do this switch?

I pretty have an idea how I will use StudioLive 16.0.2 live.

but my concern is in the studio: How will i switch between sets of monitors with StudioLive 16.0.2?
