16.4.2 » Capture mixdown on ch17+18 » Go to message
I have ran test signals and played refernce CDs thru the 2 Track In and I can confirm the master bus recorded levels are less than the main bus with all the tracks playing.

I don't have anything turned on the mains bus. I had to import the track into Studio One and crank the input of the limiter by 5dB to get the levels near where they should be. Not an ideal workflow.

What am I doing wrong? Anybody doing their mixdowns in Capture?

Thanks,
Carl

I've been using laptops on stage since P3 1GHz with sub 7mS latencies. Haven't owned a desktop since. Again, my needs are probably different.
-Stable low latency virtual instrument performance
-Composition
-Some recording/mixing

If your day gig is 30+ tracks with half dozen Waves plugs on every strip, then laptops probably aren't a good choice.

Moreso than laptop -vs- desktop, choosing an audio interface with modern, stable, low latency drivers is more important.

My laptops have always been Intel with deicated graphics and always name brand, ThinkPads, ASUS, now HP. I'm finding this HP the worst of the bunch, I could get way more going on my 6 year old ASUS.

There was nothing wrong with my ASUS, I've been using for years, but when UC1.6 came out, I was pooched in XP land. This HP is a free loaner from work, so I still have my eyes open for the next laptop. The new Intel chips are due out this fall, so waiting for that, and also considering touch screen.

Studio One General Discussion » Route Instrument Track Output -to- Another Instrument Track - Jamstix » Go to message
Just wondering how to route an instrument track's output to another instrument track.

Jamstix adjust its dynamics based on a MIDI (or Audio) performance. I can select one of my keyboards as an input and jam along with Jamstix, but it I want Jamstix to follow a track that's already recorded. How do I send that track to the Jamstix instrument track?

You would think this is the same as what is required if you wanted to layer two instruments to the same performance. In Cubase, I create two instruments and set both their inputs to the same MIDI track.

FYI, I'm just coming over from Cubase, so probably a few noob questions, thanks.

OK, I reread what yourself and CPhoenix said about the differences between Intrument and Audio tracks. I think I get it. I'll give it a few days and see if I get used to it.

In Cubase, a midi track is routed to an instrument, so you arm the MIDI track. Need to wrap my head around the new way.

Studio One Forum Community Support » S1-FaderPort Record Arm Instrument Tracks, Known Issue » Go to message
Just switching over from Cubase-AlphaTrack to S1-FaderPort. I picked up a FaderPort yesterday and was trying to record enable an instrument track, but didn't work. There was also some unusual behaviour when I was moving back and forth between and instrument track and audio track, clicking on the track REC button on the faderport.

Anyhoo, this appears to be a known issue for a couple of years now.

http://forumsarchive.presonus.com/posts/list/17852.page

I use S1 mainly for composing, very little audio, mostly instrument tracks. Should I try opening a support ticket? If there's no plans to correct the record enable issue, I'm afraid it's a deal breaker for me and I'll have to return the FaderPort and make do with the Alphatrack.

Info: out of the box I upgraded the firmware to 1.35 but the fader motor didn't work, so I upped to 1.38 and that fixed that problem, but it doesn't appear to be a firmware issue, more of S1 ignoring the REC button.

Thanks
Studio One General Discussion » Best way to record a session over an industry beat? » Go to message
OK, I figured it out and it is super easy! Easier than Cubase.

Trick is to turn the instrument track to Timebase=Seconds

I found this S1 v1 video

Once you've got the bars moved, you can put the track back to Bars/Beats.

Studio One General Discussion » Best way to record a session over an industry beat? » Go to message
Well I got to try this. The snip tool works on the tempo track. I would think that's the same as inserting a tempo change event. Is that correct?

-My downbeat is aligned with bar 2 and I've sliced the tempo track there.
-The downbeat of the next bar is just ahead of bar 3.
-I sliced the tempo track at bar 3

Now I want to move barline 3 "ahead" to the 5th quarter note in the 5 notes I tapped

I tried click drag, ctrl-click drag bar 3 to the leading edge of 1/4 note #5, but the event keeps shrinking on me.

I just want to align the 3 barline with the 5th quarter note tap.

I tried both "Stretch Audio Files to Song Tempo " options in Song Setup.

I assume this is simple, just me being a noob.
Any support appreciated,
Carl

I tried hacking around with it last night, it seemed the part would shrink and I would end up endlessly chasing the downbeat with the barline.

I found this post and it makes sense, except for the "snip tempo track" thing. I will get back to it, perhaps tonight, if I'm not too messed after happy hour

Jonathan:

When you say:

"2. open the tempo track, make a cut in it at the bar line you lined up the downbeat with, then make a cut at the next bar line as well "

Do you mean insert a tempo change event? Say the event is already aligned with bar one/beat one?

My example would be:
-on an instrument track, play quarter notes rhubato (no click)

one - two - three - four - five

I want to move bar line 2 to the five count.

My workflow is:
- press record
- noodle away on a VSTi untiI I stumble upon a groove
- extract groove and loop it
- build the arrangement around inspired groove

I've been doing this for years on Cubase, just wondering how S1 supports this kind of worklow.

Sorry just installed S1 v2.51 this weekend and just getting used to things.

Thanks,
Carl

Live Sound » Delay Alignment When Speakers Pointed Towards Stage » Go to message
Ya, it's a nightclub. Mostly live entertainment, occasional DJ. I'm thinking stereo to the flying FOH, mono to the subs and everything else. I am putting a seperate volume control at the bar for the back speakers. Normally we leave these off, but in the event we fill the room and need them, I could see them being required.

Thanks,
Carl

I see how the 1/2 distance to the bar thing could work. We wiill get the opportunity to tune the room when it is empty. I was thinking of putting a stick hit type test tone looped and try dialing it in by ear after doing the calculations. Thanks for all the suggestions.

It's a night club. The subs and the mains are already aligned. The other two pairs are set up in a quadaphonic config. I was thinking of delaying those two pairs the same as the bar is located near the center of those four cabs.

I will be using the dbx zone pro to delay zones 2 and 3.

Thanks.

I am going to time align a 400 seater room. The stage has 2 flying cabs and a couple subs installed under the stage, about 30 feet back there is another pair flying then on the back wall about 70 feet from th stage there is another pair flying, but these are pointed towards the stage angled downward.

There is a dbx ZonePro that I can specify the delays for the 2nd and 3rd pairs. The 2nd pair is a no brainer, but what about the ones on the back wall? There is about 40 feet between the 2nd and 3rd pairs and the bar where the staff hangs out is about the middle between them, so I would like it to sound good there. What is best practice for this kind of configuration?

Thanks,
Carl

OK, so I got my hands on an i5/3GB/Win7pro64 bit and everything seems to work good.

1st I turned off everything possible in the BIOS, did a clean install of Win7, did all the tweaks for audio and eventhough DPC latencies were higher than my T7300 Core Duo/2GB/XPSP3 32 bit, every thing seems to work properly.

I haven't really done what I consider a stress test or real world field test, but I am very encouraged. The downer is the new Laptop is 1366x768 and my old ASUS is 1920x1200, so I sure hope I can get the old one working when 1.7 comes out.

On the online addendum manual, the minimum requirements states 4MB, so I might chance upping the ram and see how that goes.

The new laptop's wifi seems much more robust, as adhoc network works much better, I don't think I even need a router for smaller venues.

I too was told to buy a new firewire card since mine wasn't supported. I thought that was barking up the wrong tree as I can do everything else with this laptop, AVID Venue/PT, Mackie Onyx/Ableton, Canon HD/Premiere, SL1642/UC1.5, etc. but did it anyway and still no worky.

The last set of instructions from support had me reinstalling XP to switch the hardware abstraction layer, at that point I put my foot down. I reimage with a fresh XP install whenever I udate drivers and I'm not going to spend more time and risk breaking a perfectly fine PC to get what I consider a flawed release to (maybe) work. I have far too many hours spent trying to get to the bottom of this. I guess I'll just put the SL in its case and use other interfaces for recording while I wait for 1.7 with hopes all is corrected.

Let me know how the Macs work for you, tho I do understand there are some Mac folks that have to do the old "cycle the device ID/change sample rate" jig to get things going.

Thanks.
