Good morning everyone,

I want to get a laptop strictly for doing updates, recording in Capture and running SL Remote on my iPad.

What I want to know is, what laptops are you all using. I am happy to buy second hand (save some cash), maybe an older Mac?!?

I wont be doing any editing, strictly Capture, VSL and SL remote at shows.

Any and EVERY suggestion is greatly appreciated.

On a side note ...
I attempted an update Friday (prior to a gig - first mistake) on my 24.4.2 It kept hanging, after a couple of restarts, removals etc etc. The desk still fired up, presets were there, I assumed (second mistake) it had done nothing and it was a computer glitch. I was wrong!!!!

After setting up the gig, Plugging everything in, firing it all up, we attempted a sound check (1 hour till we start) -------- NOTHING, no input, no output, no mic signal, no Tape In signal ... zero, zilch ... dead in the water!!! THANK THE LORD my drummer bought his Macbook Pro ... plugged it in, loaded UC from the original disc, forced the update ... sorted!! You have never seen a man so nervous!!!

I would imagine that a lot of the dramas people are having with Firmware etc may come down to the PC/Lappy that is feeding the info to the desk. Ours performed perfectly after the forced update ... recorded seamlessly ... Before blaming the Desk, I would look at everything connected to it.

ANYWAY ... I look forward to a huge list of Laptops and/or Firewire cards that you are all using.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Do you prefer Mac or PC? Macs may be a bit more stable because they hardware they use is more limited, you don't have so many firewire chipsets to worry about. I prefer Windows, I've never had the problems that people complain about.

I have a Samsung R580 and it works quite well as long as you disable the HDMI HD audio, which you wouldn't need for live recording anyway. I did a lot of comparing and it was definately the best value, it had far better specs and benchmarks than others around $799. Intel Core i5 2.27 GHz (dual core), 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB SATA300 5400 RPM hard drive. Only downside, nothing below $1000 had firewire, so I bought the Startech EC13942 expansion card.

If you want to go Mac, the Macbook Pro has firewire and works well with pretty much everything. It'll cost you more, so you might want to find an older Intel based Macbook or Macbook Pro with firewire. If you just want to run Capture you don't need the specs of the new Macbook Pro, it's a lot of overkill for that.

Thanks for your response. I am happy to go either way .. Mac or PC. I guess if a lot of people are using G4 Macs with no dramas I will go that way, same for non apple lappys ... I just want to get a feel for what the majority think.

g4/ g5 wont work, presonus no longer support them. You need at least a unibody mac book pro intel dual core

im currently building a rockmount desktop as laptops lack the power I need now that I want to use waves a bit more

basically buying an 8ru case - 4ru goes to the PC, 2RU to the wireless mics / IEM's and 2ru to the distro blocks for power and patching

its pretty good that way because I can just run power in to the tower- USB out for the dmx lights have no screen / keyboard and control it all via the ipad

going to be pretty grunty as well - win7 x64, 12gb ram, 3.6ghz 6 core amd cpu, just waiting on the 4ru case and the startech fw card to arrive then its all go all under $1000

Hi there.
I just got my new SL24 and i have to say it's awesome. I use it with HP's 625 widescreen and external expresscard => 2x FireWire card. Everything works out great. I don't think it is good idea to update firmware in the middle of tour, if it's possible.

I'm thinking of getting a custom made roadcase for the desk, with a few units rackspace underneath, if any of you got anything like that, i would like to see some photos for new ideas. The desk is going to be my "drug of choice" for a small 8+ gigs tour in the next few months, with the pc and accessories mounted in a pedal board-like case.

Sry about the slightly badish english

Just a heads up that Apple may be releasing the next generation of Macbook Pro laptops as early as this week (Thursday is the rumor). As per usual with Apple, there's no information on specs and features. My fingers are crossed that they'll not omit firewire, which they've already taken off the regular macbooks.

for what its worth.

you definitely do NOT need a unibody macbook. i'm using a Core Duo (not even core 2 duo) intel macbook (2006) and have no problems at all.

the only real downside is smaller HD and less RAM. both are upgradable for cheap.

i've been stalking my local craigslist for a great deal on a similar macbook pro or mac mini which can be dedicated as a SL computer. my wife hates when i take the computer out on gigs.

i'm even keeping a lookout for a broken macbook... bad screen, bad keyboard, broken cd. whatever. i'd like to run it as a headless computer anyways and use the ipad/ vnc to control it. then switch to SL-remote when the gig starts

For ease, I'd go MacBook or MacBook pro. There are newer MacBooks that have no FW, but as long as you get one that does, you should be OK. If you choose to go PC, I'd recommend getting an ADK or RAIN machine, then you wouldn't have to worry so much about getting something compatible. From what I've seen here, getting a PC laptop that will work well (if at all) is becoming more and more of a crapshoot these days. Typical price on a good used MacBook thru a reputable reseller would be about $700-800. If you're interested, check out powermax.com.

Any Intel MacBook Pro will do the job. And you can always run Windows on it as well if you want. And no worries about firewire chipsets.

I'm using an HP hdx16t dual boot xp sp3 and the ADS Pyro 1394a express card.
A bit of a time getting this particular laptop to run XP but smooth sailing afterwards.
No problems.

Just today I tested the option to record directly to usb 2.0 disk, and it was a great failure For a reason yet unknown, the recording stopped at a random intervall but the locator kept on rolling. The disk is brand new lacie 500gb fw/usb. Right after i recorded the same ammount of channels to the laptops internal Hd without any kind of problems.

Check your IRQ settings.

The USB port for your hard drive and your firewire may be sharing.

I have an Intel core duo 2.16 ghz Macbook Pro 15" from 2006 with 2gb of ram (the machine's max). It does have a FW 400 port and works fine with the StudioLive. I recently got a 17" unibody i7 intel MBP with 8gb of ram and a 256 GB SSD and don't need two machines anymore.

If you put an SSD in the 06' macbook pro (I'd recommend a 60gb from OWC) the machine would be a great dedicated SL machine. DM me if you're interested. $450 as is.

Edit: the machine also has an expresscard 3/4 slot so you could add an additional FW800 card to it for using external disks while recording. This is what I do (even on my new machine) and it works great. It's important to separate the audio and disk FireWire busses so you don't bog down one bus with too much data at once.

Thanks,
-Jon
