Before every show , or install I run a Free program capled inssider to scan the airways for the best free wifi ch. This program will show every wifi signal and it's settings.
Here is a link to the program , http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/

Now begins the education of setting up a secure proper wireless network to a whole new demographic .
What other tools are you guys using to set up your remote networks?

It's true it won't break anything but you will defanatly get network drop outs if you have five networks all running on ch 11. For the most secure stable netwoRk always use the channel with the least amount of traffic on it. And try to keep the channels spaced out at least 3 ch apart .
The end goal is not "well it works" but it works and it works good.

I have some generic networking PDF files that I got from my integration school that I will dig up and post. It's a good easy read for basic networking. I think that if we educate everyone on basic networking we will see less tech support calls about remote drop outs. And it's just some good info to have.

Im at a gig now , I will have to post those PDF files later this week.

Interesting information here. Looking forward to reading those PDFs.

For those on Mac, look for "Wifi Scanner" in the App store. Unfortunately it's not a free one.

It is EXTREMELY important there are no drops. Even a split second will take your mixer offline and it WILL NOT come back up on it's own. Hopefully the next version of the SL app will be a little more forgiving of fraction of a second drops and will hook back up to the iPad on its own.

I used the app last night on an all 5Ghz connection and it worked great, BUT I discovered at home the night before that you can do nothing else on the laptop or iPad while using the app or it will drop. Capture actually freaked out and wouldn't work at all. Using iTunes or any of my other music players somehow caused the connection to drop and there wasn't anything wireless about those programs. The player was just running from the laptop. Too bad too because there is a nifty iTunes remote control app for iPad. I could get it to work for 30 secs - 2 minutes, but then the connection would drop and I had to do "the dance" of toggling through the SL demo mixer and back to mine to get it to connect again.

I had the exact same issue last night at a gig.

I use 3 apps on stage: SL Remote, unrealBook, and Remote for iTunes. Everytime i switched apps, I had to reboot SL Remote. Hopefully the Multi-tasking will be fixed on the next version.

BTW... iStumbler on a Mac is a good Wi-Fi scanner and it's free!
