Because it's easier to add new features than fix bugs, especially intermittent bugs or ones which only occur on certain platforms. And the more features, the harder it is to regression test all the old functionality against the new stuff. Eventually you end up with a huge bloated DAW with all the features which users are screaming for ("every other DAW has this function, I MUST have it") and the thing is unreliable. It's an easy trap to fall in to. The handful which don't follow this path get branded as 'out-of-date', however stable they are, and no-one buys them anymore.

The software industry as a whole usually performs two cycles of software update; a patch update which fixes as many problems as possible and a feature update which introduces new features. This allows you to pick a good stable version if that's important to you or to be 'leading edge' and investigate new features. DAW writers seem to ignore this convention. There are probably sound reasons but I don't know what they are. I have to say the list of enhancements and fixes is pretty small for a new release - maybe there are lots more under the covers. And it's only a point release, not a major upgrade. But again, as DAW writers never produce a product roadmap or release schedule, it makes it hard to know what to expect next and when. There's not much you can do except use it as it stands and work around any problems you find. There's no perfect DAW or we'd all be using it!

Dominic

This is one of the best descriptions of how things are now. This applies to anything in recent times not just software look at facebook etc so many change/new features and yet still many old problems.

Any who I have been going to a friends who was raving about Studio One so I wanted to check it out. On first view I kind of fell in love with it tbh. I usually use reason and hate Fruity Loops with a passion, cubase looks like it was made on windows 3.11 and being a GUI user Studio One fills that void with a strong back end to the nice front... OR SO I THOUGHT!!!

My friend was running 1.6.5 I believe and that was the version I first watched him use. No issues at all with that version, he didn't have a bad word to say about it... It was when Studio One 2 was released he started having issues. He's the kind of person that doesn't like to cause a scene or hassle etc so I've come first of all to see if I can find some solutions for him and kind of have a rant as I almost brought SO2

As I say SO 1.6.5 was fine.. excellent... But when he installed 2 his cpu1 i think it was would run at about 75% even with an empty song rack. As soon as he tried to do anything such as put in some wav samples and say a vst on playback it would 100% out and just clip all over the place!

He has mentioned updates and I've just seen this (being no.4) I know he has the others and still had the issue so going try and help him and see if this will fix it doesn't look like it though!

Is 1.6.5 still available as I'd rather buy that then risk having all the issues my friend is having. I believe he has submitted a support ticked but had no reply! I don't want to be in that boat!

So has anyone else got this or a similar cpu issue? If so does this help?

Thanks

If your friend is running Win 7 or Vista, try using this optimized power profile

http://support.presonus.com/entries/203607-studio-one-optimizing-windows-vista-7-power-settings-for-studio-one

Also try disabling one or more cores and see if that solves anything. And it would be nice to know a little bit more about his setup, audio interface, latency settings and that sort of thing.

Hi thanks for the fast reply... I'll try and list specs... I reformatted it for him but that was a little while ago now.

From memory:

Laptop:-
XP Pro SP3
Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 @ 2GHz 1.99Ghz ( i think)
3gb ram

Saffire 6 USB

If I remeber correct he did change some settings something like buffer = 15ms and samples 720 (if that makes sense? lol) I was only around there yesterday my memory is shocking lol

Never had any issues with 1.6.5... any of the 2s shocking...

I'm having a good read and seems a LOT of people are reverting back to SO1 in the hope this issue will be sorted.

Now to clear the Exchange issues. I bought S1 Artist, but can't download the Soundset Builder. Every place and even the guide states that every registred Studio One user can create and upload their own content into exchange.

It would also be interesting to allow Exchange to use for collab work, with people trading projects and similar stuff.

LMike talks about how earlier in this thread.

LMike wrote:Just tried it. It works, loading a song from a SoundSet. Recording is disabled though because you can't record back to the soundset. You'd have to do a "Save to New Folder" to add to it with audio recording or to save any changes.

It can be done.

IMHO there are easier ways to share a zipped up song session between two collaborators. (Like Dropbox)
It’s also not a thing that can be shared with ALL getting the max out of the community, but let’s see what Presonus thinks about it.

I'm lost too. Where can one upload .song in Presonus Exchange? That would be wonderful for collaboration, but I don 't see the option. My intermittent screen dyslexia again?

Just uploading the .song file would not bring with it any of the music files. The song would have to be "Saved to a new folder" which, only then, would contain all the files needed for full collaboration between 2 Studio One users. Usually those folders would be between 500mb and 1gb.

You have to save the song like a Sound Set.

Uploading the song will will only do you good if it's done with 100% virtual instruments / effects, no samples / audio used.

Hey M. Although Exchange doesn't seem to be the place to upload songs (not sure why anyone but PreSonus would) you can pack a song in a soundset and, if its all FLAC with regions trimmed up pretty well, it won't be that large.

Like jpettit said though... not sure why anyone would do that.

I can see PreSonus using Exchange to host demo songs maybe.

Yes, but the remark was about only uploading the song file, ie. *.song.
