LightPeak rumors abound...!!!

Apparently (if rumors prove true) LightPeak may be surfacing at some point in mid-2011.

I would be VERY curious to know how this affects audio interfaces and at what scale.

My two guesses:

BANDWIDTH: With this kind of I/O protocol, I cannot see why it couldn't shove 48-Channels of audio down the pipe... I guess it would be the limitation of the host computer at that point as to how much it could write to a hard-drive and how fast.

On that note, I wonder it this protocol will assist in getting true multi-channel tracking at 96kHz

LATENCY: Again, not being a computer weenie, I don't know if latency will improve with this technology, or if the latency will come from the overhead of the host computer's OS and bus speeds... but one can HOPE that it assists in lower latency.

Crossing my fingers...

I spoke with someone at Presonus last week about this and the man said that they were looking to USB3. If this is true, they are making a big boo boo. Light Peak is where it's at. There are laptops with LP being shown. Avid has released ProTools 9 which does not require an interface. Avid has demonstrated an Avid video and ProTools 9 system integrated with Light Peak. Firewire'sdays are numbered.

I'd compare LP to Beta, USB3 to VHS. I'd love to see LP get the nod from everyone in the manufacturing world. Why would you want cable when you could have optical?

I'd love to see light peak come to the forefront as well. From all I've read Lightpeak is far superior for our purposes. I wish there had been support for the firewire upgrades (3200 would have been awesome).

I worry that we will be at the mercy of the consumers though. And the consumers I'm afraid will go with the USB3 even though lightpeak is superior on paper. I hope that there are some options for the people who really need something like this.

My advice and suggestions should never be considered advice or suggestions. These are mostly insane ramblings of a poor aircraft mechanic who can, strangely enough, still hear.

I definitely want to see LightPeak at some point next year. I think USB 3 and LightPeak can co-exist but with the might of Intel behind Light peak I would think USB 3 is in more danger of not being around for too long or making a big enough impact. Time will tell I guess.
