64 bit on a mac

Does my Mac's OS have to be 64 bit (Snow Leopard) before i can tell Studio One Pro to open and run in 64 bit?

I'm currently on 10.5.8 (32bit) and tried to open studio one as 64 bit. I had to accept a new license agreement and basically re register my software. It asked my for my product keys, which I found in the "My Software" area in my PreSonus Registration/account page. Okay that all worked fine. Then it immediately asked my to install the 11 packets of soundsets and demo/tutorials. I thought hmmm strange I already have all of those installed from when i first installed Studio One ages ago. I clicked "install" anyway thinking it must need 64bit versions maybe? It asked me to insert Studio One version 1.5 (my disks have always been v1.0.2) disk 1.

Then all sorts of troubles happened. Kept asking me to "Retry" and install canceled over and over. At one stage it said the first few packets had been installed but they never showed up at that location.

Finally Studio One quit unexpectedly and now everytime i launch it it asks for license acceptance, starts to gather it's plugins info then quits.

If I tell it to open in 32bit all is fine.

I'm new to 32/64bit so have i just made a dumb mistake trying to run Studio One at 64bit on a 32bit Operating System?

Not sure yet how everything works on a Mac, but on Windows 64-bit applications need a 64-bit host OS to work.

You will also need 64-bit plugins as S1 will only accept plugins of the same bit-type (32-bit S1 = 32-bit plugins, 64-bit S1 = 64-bit plugins).

I can't recall if 10.5.8 is 64 bit, maybe others can confirm. But Snow Leopard is, but it doesn't launch 64 by default. You have to hold down the 6 and 4 upon start up. Then go to apps, and right click on studio one, get info, and uncheck the open in 32 bit mode box. then you should be up on 64 bit.

Yick! Never heard that before.

Yeah. Apparently that's how it is. I know more about macs than I do studio one. Haha. Not sure why it's like that. My guess would be because not everyone is up on 64 bit yet. So booting in 32 by default guarantees compatability.

To run 64bit you will need Snow Leopard 10.6.2 or better. Running 32bit by default makes sense since there is no 64bit VST yet, and not all AU's are 64bit capable.

I'm not sure what you mean by no 64-bit VST yet?

Not on Mac. Cubase still is 32bit only there.

Macs are designed far different from Windows. On a Mac you can also run a 64-Bit Version, if the Mac itself is run in 32-Bit - but that is only for Snow leopard.
As far as I recall, OS 10.5.8 could not do that yet.

Other than that it's true: the 64-Bit Version can only handle 64-Bit Plugins.

As I am currently on 10.5.8, that may be the explanation for the behavior I'm seeing.

With 8GB Ram in your MBP you should not really hesitate to get SL. To me the update Procedure went without any problems.
