I’m getting ready to buy my first laptop. I have decided on a MacBook Pro and am looking at the used/refurbished market. I will be using this primarily for recording my band (24 tracks) thru my Presonus 24.4.2, with the possibility of remote mixing via Ipad (future). Secondary uses, in order of importance to me, are using it to DJ wedding receptions (existing DJ business, so more important) and DMX lighting control for my band (already have a DMX controller so this is less important).

Though this will be my first Mac, I am not looking for specific model numbers. I just want to know the recommended minimum specs and features that will work for the above stated uses. Please, no Mac vs PC discussion, I use both.

My questions are:

1. Are there any operating systems I should avoid (don’t play nice with the 24.4.2) or any that offer the most benefit?

2. How much RAM is sufficient for the above stated uses? Is 4Gb enough?

3. How big of hard drive, and what speed? Is 500Gb @ 5400rpm enough? I will be dumping recordings into a PC for mixdown, etc.
Laptop will be just for capturing tracks, storing mp3s for break music and DJing (and possible DMX software).

4. What screen resolution will eliminate horizontal scrolling, and provide faders instead of knobs in Studiolive?

5. What screen size? Glossy or Anti-glare?

6. What is the minimum processor recommended?

7. Is an expansion slot necessary? I have already decided I want built-in BlueTooth, AirPort Extreme card (802.11a/b/g/n), Ethernet port
and the DVD-RW/CD-RW SuperDrive-DL.

8. SD card slot?

9. Mini Display Port?

10. USB 2.0 sufficient or is 3.0 required to dump tracks into PC?

11. Does Firewire 800 work well using an 800/400 adaptor for the 24.4.2? Is there a driver chipset issue with Macs like there is with
PCs? Can I use Firewire to dump tracks to PC or is that best done via USB?

12. Any desirable features that I have missed?

Hopefully, others can use these minimums as a reference when considering a Mac laptop for similar use.

Thanks!

Why would I be offended? You have graciously taken time out of your obviously busy day to totally dismiss my questions, and provided a link to the main page of the Knowledge Base without even a hint of where to look once I got there. What's not to love?

I have been through the knowledge base and found that Presonus recommends a 7200 rpm drive. I was hoping to hear from those that use a 5400 rpm drive, what their experience is.

I see lots of info in what to get in a PC, but I don't find that info on Macs, hence the question to actual users and what works for them.

I guess I missed the Knowledge Base article that discusses glossy vs anti-glare screen, or the discussion about SD card slots and Mini Display Ports. The one about using DMX software while recording must have gotten by me too.

So, no, the answers to these questions is NOT in the Knowledge Base, and your reply could not have been less helpful if it wasn't even posted.

But, please don't take offense.

I use a rackmount PC, it's quad core around 2 GHz with 8 gig of ram. I use the internal 1 Gig 5400 hard drive for recording.

I can run VSL for my 16.4.2, Capture2 (all 18 channels recording), DriveWare, DMXIS, VirtualDJ, and Splashtop (to remote in and control all of this with my iPad) all at the same time.

Only caveat so far is that all audio must be run using the ASIO drivers, so I had to buy VirtualDJ Basic $99 to be able to use ASIO drivers for set break music, if I try to use windows media player (or anything using the windows drivers) music gets all staticy. But capture2 records over ASIO too so no problems with any recordings

That's all I can tell you

Well, some get offended if we don't provide the answers in great detail... some want the answers with no effort on their part... My feeling is, they don't learn if they don't put in the effort, that said...

I use 5400 RPM drives successfully with my Sl 16 and even the Ai 24, BUT, as the track count increases and you start demanding more and more performance, the 5400 will start to give you trouble... Some rigs, for whatever reason, have issues with 5400 RPM drives.. all are not created equal...

1. No one has every computer to try every permutation, therefore if minimum specs are met it should function, but may not offer any real performance, and as the track count and processing demands increase you will be limited in what you can do...Myself, I like to run Capture, S1, UC, SMAART, run a DJ program for break music, surf the net, even run the full blown SMAART and sometimes Soundforge to get a separate board mix.. all at the same time...That won't happen with minimum specs...

2. see #1

3. See the second sentence...again, the more tracks the poorer the performance...

4. The bigger the screen the better, or you'll end up scrolling around a LOT..

5. anti glare is better.. of course...

6. KB article...

7. future capability is always advisable...see hard drives and processor speed...

8. for what?

9. hmmm... not necessary unless you need one...

10. all Presonus gear works to specs with USB 2.0, the new USB 3.0 ports are problematic only with The Audiobox line at this time...

11. You'll ONLY get FW 400 speed with a 400/800 card and not all of the features will work (like SMAART) with the Ai24. What chipset problem are you referring to? There is an issue with USB devices...

12..right...

Not sure what you missed in the knowledgebase, but you certainly missed the code of conduct.

gadget69 and sjc193, THANK YOU for the detailed responses. This is exactly the information I was seeking. I appreciate your replies.

matthewgorman, not so much. I was polite. I was not obscene, hateful, or excessively negative. I did not post objectionable content.

Now, which part of the code of conduct were you referring too?

Not exactly nice. If you didn't get the answer you wanted, just move on. No need for a 3 paragraph sarcastic attack. gadget was not aware if you even knew about the knowledgebase. Many people aren't. In any event, there's no need for snark when someone was just taking what little time they had in their day to quickly point you to a resource that he had no idea if you knew it existed.

A simple "Thanks Gadget, anyone else have any thoughts" may have been a better approach.

And perhaps a better approach by you would have been to move on and let Gadget speak for himself.
