Mixdown to Mono?

Another beginner question:

How do I export a .wav file as a mono track?

When I export via the "Song > Export Mixdown..." I end up with a stereo file of my single track. I added an output called "Sub 1" as a test which is only the "left channel". If select that during the export that outputs an empty wav file of the same length compared to the stereo version.

*******

I do RTFM, but when I read Chapter 9 on Mixing, it assumes I want a stereo file (but I know I'm missing something.)

Backstory:
I'm recording voice, and punching in corrections (using pre-roll or punching in) and ultimately just want a single mono wave file as the output.

Seems like it should be simple, but S1 starts with music as the baseline and my useage case appears to be outside the norm.

All pointers, links, videos, or tutorials welcomed!

Setup:

Windows 8 - 64 bit
Studio One Artist v. 2.6.2.25590 Win x64

Hey again Donald

In the song setup inputs and outputs Make a new one (mono output of course)
Solo the track you wanna export (remember to put the markers on it)
The that track you wanna export mono - click export - there on that window
You can select the output - try changing it from the stereo master to that mono you just made
I haven't tested this But should be working

Saga,

Thanks again for the reply. I have the markers right, because it outputs the stereo file as expected (with audio).

Even after soloing the track, selecting "Sub 1" (my mono output) it provides a file the right length, but no audio.

If I select "Main" for the output, with the same markers selected, I get the mono file duplicated in the stereo output.

I'm sure we are simply dancing around this due to my ignorance, hopefully someone will see what I'm missing.

THANKS for all suggestions, I really appreciate it even if something doesn't work. (I have done tech support in the past, I know sometimes a few attempts are required to find a solution for some situations.)

Hey again Donald

Forgot one thing
After making that mono sub 1
Then in the Mix section - Put that respective track to that output prior to exporting
When exporting - export that sub 1 lol I just tested
I was thinking ahead and not typing fast enough lol
You have t o put the track itself to output to that sub 1 before lol

Saga,

Thanks!

Well, I'm still missing something. When I open the mixer, I don't know how to "Put that respective track to that output..." correctly.

When I export, it's still blank.

I'm dancing around it and find that if I show the "Sub 1" in the mixer, it's meter doesn't register anything when I play the audio (rather than export), so clearly I'm not assigning it correctly. I suspect that meter should be registering just like the "Main" during playback when I have it right.

Here's a screenshot of what I'm looking at.

Hey

When you double click on the track - it should show up on the mixer section below
http://prntscr.com/3vltdv
With mine it shows input L and output main
Change that main to the sub
That was just a 'dummy' track I made for show =)

Thanks to the screenshots from you two, I see what I had wrong.

I also changed my Audio I/O to "Mono Out" as that is clearer than the default "Sub 1".

My screenshot has the setting I was missing circled, hoping it helps anyone else attempting to duplicate this in the future.

As soon as everything is set right, it works (no surprise). I knew it had to be simple, but it's certainly not obvious.

I have plenty to learn, and I appreciate the excellent responses!

THANKS again!

Don

EDIT: NEVER MIND. I figured it out, but will leave this in case someone else has the same question.

On the input fader (left side on my final screen shot) just toggle (click on) "Mono Out" and select "Main" and it will play the track from both speakers... Then when mixing down, change it back to the "Mono Out" output set up earlier and it will be the single left channel, and mix down to a mono track.

Easy and I should have figured it out before posting...

********

One more question:

I have the mixdown to mono working, so now when I'm editing the file, it's also mono and only playing in my left speaker (that makes sense).

During mixing, I'd like to hear the mono track via both channels.

I suspect there is an easy way to do that too, so I can switch back and forth between mono for mixdown output, but have the mono track feed to both channels for mixing time.

Any pointers or suggestions for setting up and easily toggling between the two tasks?
