I've read the manual - it's as clear as mud. I've watched some You Tube videos - they're as clear as mud.
Can someone give me a walkthrough to add volume or effects over specific parts of a track?

For volume, rt click the mixer fader for the track, and choose Edit Volume Automation. That will then show a blue line across the track in arrange at the current volume level. From here, I select the transform tool (press and hold the pen tool, and select transform at the bottom). Now with transform, just select a range on the track where you want to volume change, then click and drag the box up or down to adjust the volume. Otherwise, you can use the arrow tool to create breakpoints in the automation line, then drag the line up or down between those points

For an effect, there are 2 ways. First is event FX. Slice out the section of audio that you want the effect on, then drag the effect from the browser to that slice only, and then adjust to taste. Otherwise, drag the effect to the mixer channel. Open the gui, and at the top there is a half circle with a dot in the middle. Rt click that and select edit bypass information. Then you can edit the bypass automation by inserting a breakpoint in the line, and then drag the line up or down to turn the effect on or off. insert another breakpoint to turn it back on/off.

Rt clicking virtually any parameter in S1 will give you the option to edit its automation, and the process is the same.

There are a few ways.
One is mentioned above

Or

Right click on the Track lane header in the arrange panel
Select Show/Hide Automation
Then when the Header area changed click the box and select the data you ash to automate (ala Volume)

When the Automation line shows on the track you are ready too edit that automation..

Again there are numerous ways to edit that?
including using any of the the drawing tools, using a control surface etc etc etc..

Just to confuse you further..
You can also add an Automation Track (rather than an automation overlay on the Audio track).
That way each Automation item can have its own dedicated track...
Nice sometimes to show them separately..
And these can then be put in folders so as not to clutter the Arrange panel.

LOL yep another way.

Move a function that you want to automate.. the fader, the pan bar a knob on a plugin .. Whatever..

The name of that object/function shows in the top left Control Link window
Grab the hand next to that name and drag it onto a track and the automation line will appear.

You can edit that line as before (or use control surface etc)

Thanks for the responses, I haven't tried all of them yet but am having issues with the ones I have. I am talking about volume but I assume my problem would apply to effects too.

1) I get the blue automation bar up and yet I find the transform tool so cumbersome. First of all I can't find an accurate way to raise/lower the volume at the right start and end point.

2) Regardless of whether I use square, freehand or whatever, I am unable to set the volume at precise levels - I can only raise or lower and hope for the best. Is there no way to adjust via a slider or be as precise?

3) Weirder still, I managed to "lift" the line up (I was trying to raise the volume) but it actually went quieter!

1) what type of track are you trying to automate? Another method to handle this is clip gain. Basically use the knife tool, and make a cut before and after you want the volume change. Then select just that slice, and notice that there is a box at the top middle of the clip. Click and hold that to raise/lower the volume of just that clip.

2)You can use the slider, either with a mouse or an external controller (Faderport for one). Just set the automation on the track (at the bottom of the fader) to either Write or Touch. Touch may be better, as it only writes over the automation when you are touching the fader. Write will write automation the entire time during playback.

3) Not sure about this one. Moving the line up makes the volume louder. Maybe you were adjusting a different parameter?

A handy trick is once you have the automation line showing.
You can select the Range Select tool.
Then hold down the Option key on a Mac (Alt on a PC) to select a start and end point range. (if you like an exact range you want to affect)
When you do this also shows a box with handles ..
Grabbing the centre handle at the top will allow you to drag the line up or down for just that selected area..

BTW the Transform Drawing Tool can do the exact same thing.... In fact holding Option down on the Range tool effectively turns it into the Transform Drawing tool..
