So...I have a macbook pro, firewire HDD, Firestudio Project and near-filed monitors...My question is a bit of a multi-part, but currently my setup is MBP>Firewire HDD>Firestudio Project>Near-fields. I use the Firestudio project as my default audio output for the MBP. That works fine, but I guess my question is this:

The HDD doesn't transfer the chain through to the FSP unless the HDD is on...but I've been told you shouldn't leave an external HDD on all the time (not sure I buy that honestly). I would like to be able to use the FSP (for audio) without having my HDD on at times...would there be any type of performance hit if the HDD was after the FSP in the chain?

Secondly...is it better to turn the FSP off when not in use, or just leave it on at all times?

Thanks in advance for the wisdom (or attempt at it anyway, haha)

UPDATE: The HDD is Firewire 800 Forgot to add that

I was told on here long ago not to use a FireWire drive and an audio interface together. I had a drive that could work with both USB and FireWire so I just switched to USB.

It does, but only one, and that's used by my external display.

Does your display have two thunderbolt ports ? If so you should be able to use a thunderbolt to firewire adapter to use with your ext. hard disk.
I use my port on my MacBook Pro for that purpose together with my Projects or 24.4.2 on the firewire 800 and they are two different firewire controllers on the same machine. Thunderbolt has that more speed so a single hard disk in the chain should be ok.
